She’s pissed we aren’t following her instructions. I can guarantee she’s used to giving them and not being questioned.

“I will count to three. Last warning. One. Two. Three!”

Gunshots ring out. The twins fall to the ground, and Sidney’s shot hits Mason’s shoulder the moment my shot hits hers. She screams out in pain and drops to her knees. I kick her gun away and jerk her to her feet.

“Where’s Taylor?”

She laughs, not answering me. I ask again. More laughter. Maniacal laughter. “You’ll never find her.”

Mason wanted her alive. I’ll give that to him, and when the time is right, she’ll die at my hands.

My body shifts as the van travels down a rough road, stirring me awake. I manage to move into a seated position, although my wrists are bound behind my back. The blindfold is thick, and it does no good for me to try and see through it. No way to know where we’re headed or how long we’ve been gone.

The van door opens, and my mother is standing there. Her smile is gone. So is any softness I thought I’d seen in her before. Like I said, playing pretend has its consequences. I climb out and stand with Raven and Rowan as the girls fearfully exit the van.

My mother walks inside first, pointing to an empty room. She orders the girls to get on their knees, and they sob as they obey. She trails her finger down a blonde woman’s cheek, then slaps her. Every part of me wants to intervene, but I stand there silent.

“He’s here,” Raven says, and my mother steps back.

He whistles in appreciation. “Nice haul.”

I try not to stare at him, but he’s not what I expected. Honestly, I don’t know what I expected. A devil in the flesh with red skin, sharp horns, and glowing eyes? Well, he’s certainly not that. He’s a terrible beauty, with dark wavy hair and hazel eyes. There’s something eerily familiar about him. Perhaps I’ve seen him before but can’t place him. If I didn’t know what he was capable of, I’d say he was attractive.

“Who’s this?” His voice is a deep timber void of emotion.

My heart pounds as he approaches me. He’s close enough I can feel his breath on my face. Those eyes of his bore right through me.

“My daughter.”

His lip twitches. He knows who I am and what she’s put me through. She didn’t run this by him. He glares at my mother and she lowers her head in shame. It’s obvious he’s the man in charge.

“And you trust her?”

Not once does his eyes leave mine. My mother replies but her words are lost on me. I can’t speak. I can barely breathe.

“Shoot the girls,” he orders, and I blink a few times, unsure if he’s talking to me or my mother. He grabs my hand and puts a gun in it. “Shoot the girls.”

They all cry out, begging and pleading for us to spare their lives. My hand trembles, and I shake my head, thrusting the gun back toward him.

“I can’t…I can’t do that.”

Frowning, he says, “Why not? Any one of them would do it.”

Tears fill my eyes, and I shake my head again. “I can’t.”

He raises the gun to my cheek, running the tip over my skin as tears stream down my face. He makes a “tsk” sound with his tongue.

“You can’t do it because you’re not like them, are you?”

I sob out loud when he pushes the gun into my mouth. This is it. He’s going to kill me, and I’ll never see Christian again. It’s over.

But he doesn’t pull the trigger.

“Bind her wrists and blindfold her like the others. She’s coming with me.”
