Iwait outside the daycare center, hoping that it goes well for Taylor. She’s been through a lot lately, and getting this job would make her happy. Our club could use a little happiness.

We’ve found no trace of the missing girls. No hits on The Harvester. They weren’t sold in Alabama. They also weren’t taken to California like the other girls were. We’ll never find them, but I pray we can stop it from happening again.

Sidney’s words replay in my head over and over. I haven’t talked to Mason about what she said. I’m not certain I want to know the answer. If he’s keeping secrets from the club again, it’ll destroy us.

Taylor emerges, a big smile on her face. I get out and go to her, hugging her.

“You got the job?”

She nods, and we get in the vehicle. “I wasn’t sure I would. I sucked during the actual interview, but the kids took to me, and they liked that.”

“You’re great with kids. I’ve seen how you are with them.”

“I love kids,” she replies. “What about you?”

A long time ago, I thought kids would absolutely be part of my future. Once I joined the club, I decided I didn’t want them. I also decided I didn’t want a relationship. That’s changed.

“If you’re asking if I want to see your belly growing with my child, the answer is yes. Some day.”

She threads her fingers with mine, smiling over at me. We drive back to the clubhouse, chatting about her new job and when she’ll start. When we arrive, her gaze darts to the garage. She hasn’t asked much about what’s happening in there. I don’t offer her any information, but I see her looking, and I know she wants to know.

“She’s strapped to a chair. She isn’t getting free. Everything is locked down. But she isn’t cooperating either. I’ve seen men crumble under less pressure.”

“I want to see her.”

“You don’t have to.”

“Yes, I do.”

Christian tried to talk me out of seeing my mother, but I have a plan. I have everything she never wanted me to get. She’s going to hate that. If I can get under her skin, she may give up The Harvester.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you?”

I nod. “I’m sure.”

“I’m waiting up here. If you need me, I’ll be right there.”

He gives me a kiss, and I start down the stairs. I fight back a gag at the smell. The moment I see her, this sense of satisfaction washes over me. She’s broken and bruised, just like I used to be. All the times I begged and pleaded with her, not once did she take pity on me. I feel no pity for her.

“Taylor, my sweet girl. How are you here?”

She’s been through hell, that’s clear. Her blonde hair is greasy and nasty, and dried blood crusts her nose and lips. One of her eyes is bruised and swollen shut. She’s naked, and there are welts and marks all over her body. It’s a hell she put herself in.

“The Harvester sent me. You let him down.”

She shakes her head. “That’s not true.”

“Look where you are, Mother. You’re a liability for him.”

I wasn’t exactly sure what I’d say when I got down here, but she worships The Harvester. Thinking he’s disappointed in her will get her riled up.

“You don’t know him like I do. You don’t!”
