I take another long pull on my beer, my mouth is as dry as the desert.

Nodding, I say, “I can do that.”

He pulls out a set of car keys from his pocket and places them in front of me on the bar and walks out. How he got his hands on her keys, I have no idea.

I finish my beer and head up to my room. Shay’s lying on the bed, scrolling through her phone and I start counting down till it’s Lex on my bed. Preferably not wearing a scrap of clothing.

“I’ve found us a place.” This gets her attention, and she drops her phone and sits up.

“Will things go back to normal now? Like, between us? Have you forgiven me for being stupid?”

Crossing the room, I sit on the end of the bed and put on the performance of a lifetime.

Taking hold of her hand, I say, “I shouldn’t have taken all the crap going on in my life out on you. I freaked and you were easiest to take it out on.”

She withdraws her hand and sidles up to me and wraps her arms around me.

“I get it, babe. Tell me what this new place is like?”

“Pack your bag and I’ll show you.”

“We’re going tonight?”

“Yep.”

She plants a kiss on my cheek and bounces off the bed. When she’s getting something she wants, she moves fucking fast and with her mouth shut.

The few things she has unpacked are shoved into her case and she’s ready to leave in under five minutes. As I watch her, I feel nothing. It’s not right but it is what it is. She’s the one who made the threat, and she knows full well what the consequences are. It’s not on me if she doesn’t see tonight coming.

“I’m ready,” she chirps.

Come the morning, I’ll have nothing standing in my way when it comes to Lexi and it’s what has me pushing her out of the room, down the stairs, past the brothers quietly watching on and outside, and into her car.

“What’s the rush?” She laughs.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had you…” I trail off and it’s enough for her to squirm in her seat and quit with the questions.

Checking my phone, I read the address Psycho sent me and the few directions he added on.

“Now we’re doing the whole grown-up thing and officially moving in together, maybe we can start a family?”

Fucking hell. How do you go from supposedly moving in together to having kids? But still, I keep the façade going.

“It’s certainly something to think about.” The lie flows so easily from my lips.

I turn on the radio and turn it up to drown out any more of her ridiculous ideas. It’s not long before the warehouse comes into view. I don’t see Psycho’s ride anywhere.

“Please tell me this isn’t some kind of loft space, it’s in the middle of nowhere,” Shay grinds out.

“Not exactly.”

Her excitement dies and I catch the moment she realises the truth. “There is no new place, is there?”

Softly, I say, “You should’ve gone home, Shay. You would’ve gone on to have kids and a guy who loved you, but you had to run your mouth and fuck it up.”

Her mouth opens but before she can argue with me, her door opens, and a gloved hand covers her mouth before she’s pulled out.

Her muffled scream dies to a silence and her eyes widen in fear. I climbed out of the car, barely seeing my brother. Dressed in black, head to toe, he’s unrecognisable even to me. This is Psycho doing what he does best, and I’ve got a front-row ticket.
