They say women are confusing, but I find men are just as much. Women are pretty easy to work out, but men, they’re like stone.

To take my mind off of him, I reach for the remote and flick through the channels until I find an old comedy special. Getting comfortable, I lie down and close my eyes. Hopefully, I’ll know what to say when the time comes to talk.

I come to and I don’t know why. The TV is now on stand-by and the only thing I can hear is the clock ticking on the wall. I listen out as my heart thumps in my chest and I sit up, the throw-over slipping down to the floor. I must’ve been dreaming, not that I can remember what I was dreaming about.

Picking up the wine glasses and the empty bottle, I take them through to the kitchen and dump the bottle in the recycling bin and the glasses in the sink. I work quickly washing them up and leave them to dry on the draining board. I wipe down the counters and as I go to turn off the light, I stop in my tracks at the sight of the back door ajar.

What the fuck? The woman I was in prison floods through me and the instinct to protect my space hits me hard, just like wearing a second skin once again.

“Lex! Louis said the sensor alarm has been triggered…” I hear Evie yell but it’s the thud of a footstep behind me that has me concentrating on the right now rather than Evie at the top of the stairs. I slowly turn and I’m met with a masked intruder. My first instinct is to reach out for anything I can use as a weapon, however, Evie keeps a tidy house and there’s nothing in reach. Relying on myself, I break the spell of the staring contest we have going on and swing my fist into their jaw. It barely bothers him, and his arms shoot out and pull me against him. My back to his chest. I struggle and thrash my body, dropping to a dead weight in his arms when my thrashing doesn’t help.

“Lex, talk to me!” Evie calls, her voice growing closer.

“Stay where you are! Tell Lou…”

A cloth is pressed over my mouth and as I inhale, I quickly become heavy and it’s a chore to keep my eyes open. Everything goes black.

It takes a moment for my vision to clear. With a heavy head, I take in the room around me. The small room is dark. My head is banging, and I go to cradle it but find my hands tied. Focusing back on the room, it’s bare of everything except the dirty mattress I’ve been laid on. The taste of blood coats my mouth. I run my tongue over my teeth and lips, finding my teeth intact but a split on my top lip. The fucker hit me after knocking me out.

The door opens and a stocky built prick walks in, his face hidden under his balaclava. His movements are jerky, is he old?

“Who are you?”

Nothing.

“Where am I?”

Again, nothing.

“Why am I here?”

The arsehole says nothing and kicks his boot into my thigh. It’s not the first time I’ve been kicked so I ride out the pain and threaten, “My brother is going to fucking kill you. Mark my words, you’re as good as dead.”

The arsehole stares down at me and I watch on as his chest bobs up and down. He’s silently laughing at me. “No one knows where you are, who I am, or why you’ve been taken. Your brother won’t know where to begin looking for you. That I can promise you. I’ve been planning this for ten fucking years.”

Swallowing thickly, it hits me who this prick is. Matt’s dad. I remember his voice now.

Laughing, I catch myself. The dried blood splits and the air stings my lip.

“Mr. Connelly, if you think I have more than one person with a vendetta against me, you’ll be surprisingly wrong. You’re gonna be the first one he comes looking for. He’s a tracker by nature. You’re fucked.”

This angers him and he drops to his knees in front of me. Gripping onto my sweater, he yanks me closer to his face and growls, “You ruined my son’s life, and I firmly believe in an eye for an eye.”

Chapter Sixteen

Manik

Psycho got the notification his home security system had been triggered and as he watched the camera feed on his phone, I saw the colour drain from his face. The second he jumped to his feet and dropped his phone to shove his feet into his boots, I saw black-and-white images of his garden. I didn't understand what was happening until he called Evie, and he looked at me as if he was addressing both of us simultaneously.

I couldn’t call Lexi fast enough, hoping this was a misunderstanding but it kept ringing out and eventually, I got her voicemail.

There was no question Psycho was preparing to leave and ride back to Eastford without me. Lexi was taken.

Psycho lets out a roar and brothers rush out of their tents to see what’s going on. Chaos is first to reach Psycho and frowns as he watches me. I can’t move for shit. When I killed that guy it was an accident. I have no fucking idea who has the woman that has become my fucking world but I’m already planning murder. Cold, vicious, brutal, murder.

“Psy, brother, what the fuck?” Chaos snaps trying to block Psycho’s every move to leave.

“Someone broke into my house and took Lex.”
