“Thank you. How about we get out of here?”

“I thought you’d never ask, but first I wanna take you somewhere.”

Somewhere turns out to be the beach. He bends down and takes my boots off for me and tosses them by his bike. He takes his own off and they too join mine by his bike.

Hand in hand we walk down to the water, and he moves behind me and wraps his arms around me.

“I’ll always love you, Lex. In good times and in the rough. You’re the most important person in my life, fuck, you’re more important than myself. There isn’t a thing I wouldn’t do for you, not a single fucking thing, and I’m going to spend the rest of my life showing you just how great life can be. I’m going to make you so fucking happy, you’re going to spend every day wondering if it’s real. And most of all, I’m going to do it all as your husband, because you Lexi Mitchell have me at your side and I’m never going anywhere unless you’re with me.”

“Is this you asking me to marry you?”

“Fuck yeah.”

“I don’t see you down on one knee,” I point out.

I feel the cold as he unwraps his arms from around me and bends down on one knee.

“Anything you wish.”

He takes my hand and something twinkles on my fourth finger as a gold band slips onto my finger.

“Babe, will you marry me?”

Dropping to my knees, I want my answer to come from an equal footing.

“Yes. I’ll marry you, but I’m still not going to cook every day.”

“Fifty-fifty. In everything.”

Life has a funny way of leading you in the direction you need to go and I needed to be out of the way to come back and meet Vincent. For this guy, I’d spend another ten years away just to be with him all over again. I know what it is to love and to be loved and maybe, who I am now would still lose my shit to keep it.

It’s just after one in the morning and I wake to Psycho leaning over me with his finger against his mouth. What the fuck? sweeping my eyes toward Lexi, she’s sleeping soundly, curled up next to me. Psycho points his finger at me and then at the door. He leaves as quietly as a mouse and I slide out of bed and dress, all without waking Lexi.

The front door is wide open, and I get the hint to follow him. Grabbing my smokes and keys, I lock up on my way out. Psycho’s waiting in a car I’ve not seen before, and I climb into the passenger side.

“You do remember there are things called phones?”

The only Mitchell I want to wake up to is his sister. Not that she’ll be a Mitchell for much longer. Lexi Hayes has a nice ring to it.

“I didn’t want to risk waking Lex. As far as she’ll know, you never left.”

Frowning, I ask, “What’s going on?”

“I know who took her.”

My blood freezes and I wait for him to explain.

“We had a chat a while back and out of nowhere, she asked about Beth and Matt. It was weird. The only reason I could come up with is because it was someone related to them who took her.”

“I take it you’ve looked into it?”

“The second we got back to town.”

“So? Who the fuck was it?”

“Matt’s dad and Beth’s brother.”
