“Leo, I promise to trust you,” I said. “And that’s hard for someone like me, who always likes to do things on her own. But sometimes you need other people. And I’ve needed you a lot. Every time I have, you’ve proven that you will be there for me. Going forward, I promise to fall backwards into your arms without flinching. And I promise to love you and never push you away and to never make you question your decision to make me and Dorothy a part of your life.”

It was more succinct and less meandering than Leo’s, but I suppose that was the benefit of having actually written it out instead of doing it on the spot. But I hadn’t gotten to the best part.

“And I promise that life will never be boring. In fact, it’s about to get even more exciting.”

His eyes lit up at that, intrigued by what I’d just said.

“Because in just seven months' time, Dorothy will have a brother or sister,” I said, “and this one will definitely have your eyes. For real this time.”

He broke into his legendary smile and his eyes filled with tears, and though it was breaking with tradition, he leaned forward and kissed me hard on the mouth, with all the passion in the world, just to remind me of how lucky I was to be in love with someone who was so in love with me.

“Uh,” Sloane said, “Leo Maxwell, do you take Mila Saunders to be your wife?”

“Mmm-hmm,” he said, still kissing me.

“And Mila, do you…?”

I gave a thumbs up sign, rather than let the kissing stop.

“By the power vested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may continue kissing the bride.”

And so he did. And I’d never been happier.
