It looked ominous—everything felt ominous at the moment, except for her butt, which still felt hot and throbby—but she was almost afraid to draw his attention to it. Hoping to distract him, she blurted, “Why don’t the McCoys ever associate with the people of Cedar Bee? Your land falls inside town limits anyway, but no one ever sees you.”

“Because of an old family legend. No,” he said when she raised an eyebrow. “Not that legend. My great-great-great-grandfather, a poor lumberjack who lived in this very cabin, fell in love with a girl from the town. Her father refused to give them his blessings, and she married someone else. Granted there hadn’t been any courtship between the two of them. Bo McCoy had simply laid his eyes on her and decided she would be his bride. It made sense her family wasn’t prepared to give away their beloved daughter to a scary, grimy lumberjack with suspect table manners, but nothing twists up a McCoy more than his wounded pride. He swore he’d never set foot in town again. And we kinda carried that forward.”

She nodded, although she’d been staring at his mouth moving more than listening to his story. Oh, his voice was sexy, that low grumble rising and falling, like velvet on her ears, but she truly could not stop looking at his handsome face. The combination was more than she could bear.

He was mesmerizing.

Enthralling.

Fascinating.

And scary.

Her friends had been right about him.

She found herself dying to know if he had a girlfriend or just had casual encounters with a lot of different women. Suddenly, a strange kind of feeling slithered up her spine. She didn’t want to imagine him with other women, which was stupid.

She was stupid. She was also being too quiet. “Don’t you get lonely here all by yourself?”

“I have my big cock to keep me company.”

She almost choked while taking a sip of the juice.

“Easy, Little Kitten,” Jagger said, his voice tinged with authority and command.

Melted.

All of her melted all over again. Yup, it was time she left.

“I think I should go,” she said, standing up. “Thank you for the sandwich and the juice. And the pie. And the ointment and the T-shirt.”

“What about the spanking, Finley? You want to thank me for that, too?”

“Umm... No. That’s a hard, hard no, thank you very much. And don’t do that grin, chuckle thing you do.”

“Why not?”

Because it makes me forget my name, and I rather like my name.

“Because it’s... terrible. It’s a terrible chuckle. You shouldn’t do it anymore.”

He did it anyway.

For a moment, she actually didn’t want to go home.

Home was where she was going to have to marry Jeremy Lloyd to save her father’s business.

Home was where Giselle Banks lived... well, not lived technically, but she knew what she meant.

Arg, Giselle. She so desperately wished she could shut her up forever.

Taking a deep breath, she opened her mouth but had no idea what she had planned to say until she had said it.

“Okay, look. I have a stepcousin. Her name is Giselle. She’s utterly beautiful. Tall, skinny, and just sofreaking stunning. But she has this way of making me feel small and just the worst person ever. She’s vegan, she doesn’t eat anything with gluten in it, not for health reasons, but because she has the willpower to resist bread and burgers, and she wants everyone to know that.”

Jagger didn’t ask what the hell all this had to do with breaking into his house and trying to take naked photos of him. He simply tipped his head, listening.

Finley felt her tension ease and babbled on, even more loquacious than before. “Her body is a temple, and she speaks to Mother Nature. When I say she’s perfect, she’s perfect. She doesn’t believe in materialistic things. She believes in nature. She’s good and selfless, and she just makes me feel horrible, because I can’t live without bread, burgers, and shoes, but I’m a good person. Just because I need comfort and food and I can’t speak to Mother Nature because Mother Nature has bugs, I’m still good. I know I am!”
