But the bedroom also held a couple chairs, and he plopped into one.

“Oh, for Pete’s sake—lie on the bed. I’ll take the chair. Like I said, I’m watching television anyway. And I need to catch up on my YouTube videos.”

He’d already toed off his shoes. “You sure?”

“Want me to tell you a bedtime story?”

“Can you sing to me?”

“The wheels on the bus—”

“Okay. I take it back.” He climbed onto the bed, stomach down, pulling the pillow under his head, his eyes closed. “Tell me if I stop breathing.”

She looked at him.

He smiled. “Kidding.” Then, “But no, really.”

“Hey, Ziggy. What’s going on?”

It wasVikka’s fault she’d ended up in the infirmary.

Well, they both had. And because of that, she looked over at Vikka and smiled.

“It worked,” Vikka said.

Shae leaned her head back against the wall, closed her eyes. “Maybe, hopefully.”

Her jaw still hurt from Vikka’s punch, but Vikka sported a fat lip.

“You hit good.”

“My boyfriend taught me that.”

Probably had saved her life, really, last night when Vikka approached her in the showers.

And to think she’d actually had a day where she’d thought she might survive. Vikka had carved a wide path around her since her return. Maybe Shae had gotten too confident.

Whatever it was, she’d stood in the shower, her eyes closed—probably a bad move—and let the lukewarm water wash away the dirt. She had a clean jumpsuit waiting, too, thanks to the laundry.
