“Hilarious. I dropped two passes in that game.”

“I know. I can’t wait.”

“I really am breaking up with you.”

“Good. I need to date someone with a better reception record.”

He narrowed his eyes at her. “Fine.”

“Does your head still hurt?”

“No. I’m just…tired. And sore. They woke me up every three hours to take my blood pressure.”

“I know. I was there.”

He opened his eyes. Looked at her. “Yes. Yes, you were. Thanks for that.”

She didn’t know why his words sort of just wheedled into her bones, warmed them. Maybe it was the way his gaze stayed on her.

Seeing her.

The doors opened and he got out. Different floor than hers. She’d called and extended her stay a few days, hoping—

Uh oh.

He’d reached his door. Pulled out his key. Ran it over the door lock.

The light beeped red.

“What?” He tried again.

Beep. “Aw—”

“Sorry, Hudson. I extended my stay, but I forgot to do yours.”

He leaned his forehead against his door. “And my clothes?”

“Probably at the front desk?”

He sighed, turned, his shoulder against the door. “Can I…”

“C’mon. I’m a sucker for the homeless.”

He followed her to the elevator and took it down to the fourth floor. “It’s not the penthouse suite, but…”

“I don’t care. I’ll sleep on the sofa.”

“Actually, I don’t have a sofa. Just that boring budget room. But it does have a double bed, and a small balcony, and in the meantime, I’ll see if they have any more rooms.”

“I could kiss you.”

“Yeah, you homeless men are all the same.”

But his words sat with her anyway.

She opened her door and let him in.

Suddenly, that budget room seemed way too small. He barely fit into the tiny entryway between the door and the closet.
