“Let me guess,” he sneered. “Jordansen told you that. He also told you we killed the guy. Like we’re the bad guys here. No, the real monster is the guy you’ve been sleeping with.”

“Hey, officer,” someone called from behind us. “You gotta see this.”

Angel glanced at him, then shook his head. “Stay here,” he commanded me as he left.

The second he turned and left, I immediately moved, searching the small motel room for any evidence I could find.

I tried to notice anything that stood out or seemed out of place. As I knelt to peer behind the bed, I saw something sticking out of the corner as if it had fallen out of someone’s pocket. There was a familiar logo on the card.

I picked it up.

It was a card.

For Revit Renewables.

Why would that be here?

Suddenly, it hit me.

What if we were looking at this all wrong? What if the reason neither Chris nor Chase could find out who was doing this was that they were looking at the wrong enemies? The most obvious ones. The ones they thought they knew.

But there were people and things Chase had no idea about.

“What are you doing?” Angel’s voice had me jerking upright, and I glanced up to find him glaring at me accusingly from the doorway.

I wanted to tell him what I found, but I knew he wouldn’t believe me. I needed to get to Chase first. We needed more evidence.

“Leaving,” I said, brushing past him. “I’ll see you later.”

He caught my arm as I tried to leave, and I turned to him.

“We’re not done talking,” he said.

I ripped my arm from his grasp. “Well, I am.”

And then I walked away, ignoring his calls behind me.

After I got outside, I immediately called Chase on the phone. “Hey, it’s me. I think I found something. But I’ll need to explain it in detail when I get back.”

“Can’t you just explain it now?” he asked.

“No. It’s too dangerous. I’ll get to Ferro and Doper and see you soon.”

I hung up and continued walking, but I didn’t get far.

As I was approaching the alley to meet up with Ferro and Doper, something slammed into my head, and the whole world went dark.

CHRIS

I sat on a metal chair in the interrogation room, working through the list of people in my head until I narrowed it down to about three.

There were only a few ways my DNA could have gotten into that motel room. Someone likely took it directly from me and placed it there. That wouldn’t be too difficult. Someone could take a strand of hair from me and bring it to the crime scene.

But two things still bothered me. The cufflinks and the victim.

Whoever it was, they knew I was looking into the Morano brothers, which meant they were either following a member of my team, or they were a member of my team.
