“Yes, but they might miss something,” I insisted, feeling the urgency beat at my chest. “I knew the guy who died. We worked together for some time, and for a long while, I thought he was stalking me. Maybe I’ll find something the police won’t.”

“I don’t know. I mean, I’m pretty sure Chris wanted you to stay here.”

“Yes, but the police aren’t going to look any further into this. They think they have their guy, and they’ve been after Chris for years. They’ll see it as an open and shut case.” I shook my head. “It’s up to me to look at the crime scene with new eyes.”

I thought back to Angel’s gleeful smile when he’d thrown open the door and cuffed Chris. It had seemed vindictive if nothing else, and I didn’t think it had to do with his inherent sense of justice.

“Come on,” I urged, but Chase shook his head.

“How are you going to get to the crime scene anyway?” he questioned.

“Don’t worry,” I said mysteriously. “I have my ways.”

Angel wasn’t happy to see me at the crime scene.

In fact, he frowned when he saw me approaching the motel room.

“You’re not supposed to be here,” he said coldly.

“I know,” I said, stepping up to him. “I was looking for you.”

Actually, I hadn’t been, but it was a nice coincidence that he was at the crime scene.

Angel crossed his hands over his chest and asked, “What did you want to talk to me about?”

I sighed. “Look, you know he didn’t do it. I watched him this entire time. He didn’t have time to sneak off and do anything.”

“Ah, yes. You watched him. Was this between fucking him?”

I didn’t flinch at his accusatory tone. “You told me to do whatever was necessary to get the truth, didn’t you?”

Angel frowned at me doubtfully. “That’s why you slept with him?”

I shrugged, allowing him to draw his own conclusion. Disgust curled his lip.

“I can’t believe you would use yourself like that,” he said.

“Why?” I asked, sounding somewhat churlish. “Because you’re the only one allowed to use me?”

Angel jerked like he’d been shot. And his face turned red.

“So now that we’ve caught him, what are you going to do? You want to get back together with me?” he sneered the words.

Asshole. I was suddenly so happy that Chris humiliated him back there.

“Look, this isn’t even about that,” I said. “And don’t pretend like you’re all innocent in this. Because I know you framed Frederick Morano as my stalker just so I would work for you.”

“What are you talking about?” He frowned, confusion marring his features.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about,” I gritted out. “I’m already on to your whole game. You don’t have to play it anymore.”

“I have no fucking clue what you’re talking about,” Angel bit back, and there was enough angry confusion in his voice to give me pause.

“Did you or did you not break into my home so I would think the Moranos were after me?”

“No,” he gasped, eyes wide. “Are you insane?”

I blinked at them. He really looked like he was telling the truth.
