“Fine,” I said. Only an idiot would keep incriminating files in their home. I wasn’t going home anyway. I had more important things to deal with.

The first thing I did was call Chase and ask him, “Is she there?”

“Yeah, she was.”

I froze, worry and panic starting to fill me. “Wait, what do you meanwas?”

“She…” Chase sighed. “She insisted on visiting the crime scene to see if she could find any evidence that would prove your innocence.”

“And you let her?” The sound exploded from me, along with the rage. Damn it. I trusted him to keep her safe. “Why the fuck would you let her go there alone?”

“Hey, calm down, alright? Give me more credit. I didn’t let her go alone. I have a few men with her.”

“Which men?” I demanded.

“Your favorites. Ferro and Doper.”

“Fucking damn it.” I immediately began calling Doper, but the call kept going straight to voicemail. Shit.

The bastard had betrayed me.

“Is everything okay?” Sam asked, and I turned to look at him. He took an apprehensive step back the minute I did, and I immediately pinned him with a look.

“I need to borrow your car,” I told him.

He looked like he wanted to tell me it was a bad idea, but then he closed his mouth and nodded, giving in.

On the way there, I called Mansen.

Thankfully, he picked up. Before I could lay into him, he immediately said, “Look, I don’t have anything to do with it.”

“Don’t play dumb with me,” I ground out. “How the fuck did the cops find out about Revit Renewables?” The trash picking line by the cop clued me in.

“I don’t know,” he said. “Look, all I know is that you need to tell your man to stop coming to threaten me all the time. I already did what you wanted.”

“What do you mean?” I demanded. “Which man?”

“The one who was with you the other day,” he answered, confirming my worst suspicions. “He already came to me before that. He wanted to know about the girl.”

“Which girl?” Alarm and worry quickened my blood.

“Dom’s daughter.”

Fuck. So Doper had been searching for Emily even before me? Why? What did she have to do with this?

“What did he want with her?” I asked.

“Same as you. He wanted to know if I found her or if I told her anything about the will,” he said. “That was why I was so confused when you came and asked me again. You already told me to hold off on reaching out to her about the will.”

Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

I’d just made a huge mistake.

With a quick thanks, I hung up on the lawyer and was about to call Chase, but he beat me to it.

“I have bad news,” Chase immediately said when I picked up. His voice told me everything I needed to know even before I asked, but I asked anyway.

“What is it?”
