“It’s Emily. She’s nowhere to be found. And Doper is here, but he’s wounded pretty badly.”

My blood ran cold. This was the worst-case scenario. “What do you mean?”

“We’re at the spot where Emily was supposed to meet up with Ferro and Doper. When we got here, we found Doper wounded,” Chase said. “I’m sorry, man. You might want to come here immediately.”

I hung up right away and drove faster than the speed of light to the alley they were at. When I got there, Doper was sitting on the ground with red marring his side, and he was holding onto it. The Brotherhood doctor was looking at his wound.

“I’m sorry, boss,” Doper apologized weakly. “He attacked me from nowhere, and I had no choice. I couldn’t help her.”

“What the fuck do you mean?”

“Ferro,” he said. “I think Ferro took your woman.”

It hit me out of nowhere.Ferro? Everything was cloudy in my mind. I suspected Doper but never Ferro.

But then, things started to make sense to me. When Ferro asked about her before, it was like he already knew about her. He knew she lived a difficult life. I just assumed they had a conversation about it, but what if he knew because he looked into her?

I mean, he clearly didn’t give a fuck about her. I finally understood why he asked me those questions. He just wanted to find out how much I gave a fuck.

The bastard betrayed me.

But what was his endgame?

Money? Ferro was never one driven by money. He had plenty of opportunities to rat me out for millions already.

“Look at this,” Chase said out of the blue, handing me a card. I frowned as I stared down at the Revit Renewables logo.

“Why do you have this?” I asked.

“Your woman was holding it,” Doper said when he saw me holding the card. “I saw Ferro knock her out, and I tried to take him out, but he was faster than me. He took her, and I think they left that behind.”

“But why would she have this?”

“Much earlier, she called and said she found something at the crime scene and knew who was doing this,” Chase said, appearing deep in thought. “But then, when I probed further, she said she had to explain it to me in person.”

Right then, I understood.

It was all settling together like pieces of a puzzle in my mind, and I glanced back at him to confirm it.

“Anyway, I have Ansel tracking Ferro right now,” Chase said, gesturing to the phone in his hand.

“I suspected something was going on with him when he started asking me odd questions about the Moranos,” Ansel said through the speakerphone. “Some of the stuff he asked me was stuff I already told you, which was how I knew it wasn’t you asking. So I installed a tracker on his phone just in case. And one in his Fitbit as a backup.”

“Good. He’s probably going to use a burner phone, but we can get him through his Fitbit. He never takes off the damn thing.” I made a note to give Ansel a big present and a bonus after this for all his quick thinking. “I’m going after him.”

But before I could, my phone rang. I already knew who it was before I even answered.

“Listen up, bastard,” Ferro said in a distorted voice. “If you want to see your girl alive again, you better listen carefully.”

EMILY

My head hurt.

That was the first thing I was aware of the minute I came to. The pain was just ripping apart my temples.

As I slowly pried my eyes open, I became aware of even more things like the darkness of the room, the damp and cool floor, and the fact that everything in the room smelled rank, kind of like mildew.
