He sighs and holds me tight. “You can rely on me. I will always be there for you. I will always protect you. Even from filth like this.” I hear him kick the guy and smirk.

“Where did you go?” I’m still worried about that.

“The captain sent me to an apartment that a snitch said might have the guy we’re looking for.”

“And?”

“It was this guy’s lover, boyfriend? Whatever. The point is. He killed him. Which means he wouldn’t have cared about killing you if he was willing to kill the man he loved.”

My belly lurches. “How could someone do that?”

“I don’t know. I really don’t. We can ask. But it’s doubtful he’ll ever say.”

The room is suddenly flooded with flashlights and bodies. “You alright, Fairchild?”

“We’re good, Captain.”

We all look down at the guy passed out cold on the floor. One look and I recognize the guy from the gym. His eyes open when one of the officers grabs his shoulder and jerks him up. Steel grey eyes laser into me and I shiver. “That’s him. That’s the man I saw outside the gym. The one who killed the mayor.”

“Good enough.” The captain motions to one of the other guys there and he grabs the man. “Get him out of here and back to the station.” Then he turns to look at Raymond and I.

“I think you two deserve a break. Raymond don’t come in tomorrow.”

“You mean today?”he groans.

“Yeah. Today. I’ll expect to see you tomorrow morning and you’ll need to write up a report. One for her too.”

He nods at us and the crime scene guys walk in the door. Ray groans. “I think we’re gonna have to go somewhere else to get some peace and quiet.”

I laugh loud and long and he eyes me warily. “You good?”

“Honestly? I’ve never been better.”

“Why?”

“Because I know you’re not going to leave me and it’s over.”

He tugs me to him and his lips seal mine, his tongue delving inside to tangle with mine until several men clear their throats.

He leans over and whispers in my ear. “Let’s go. I’m taking you to a hotel and then I’m gonna make love to you until I forget what it looked like seeing you grappling with that guy. And then I’m gonna take you to pick a ring out because we’re getting married as soon as possible.”

“Don’t you need more time?”

“To know that I love you and want you to be my wife? Nope. The heart knows what it wants and so do I.”

And then he picks me up in his arms and carries me out of that place, his hands strong and yet so gentle, holding me like I’m more precious than diamonds.

I never thought I’d find what I wanted or needed. I sure as hell never thought it would be from a smart ass detective who loves to wind me up until I snap.

But the heart does know what it wants and I want him.

“I love you, Ray.”

“I love you too, baby. Let’s go find someplace quiet so I can show you how much.”

The day’s lost to the muffled sounds of love, laughter and desire as we lose ourselves in the huge bed in the hotel. Desire swells and crests, dragging us into ever-growing ecstasy and we fall into each other’s arms, sighing.

I hold my hand up and admire the huge diamond on my left hand and cuddle into my future. The only man that I trust and the only man who will ever hold my heart.
