Griffin’s lips harden in a flat line. “Hunter, I need to see you outside.”

CHAPTER32

Hunter

Sophie’s pregnant.

Withourbaby.

From the second I found out, there was no doubt in my mind that the baby is mine.Ours.

Holy shit.

I’m going to be a dad.

The conversation I had with Barrett this afternoon at tennis registers. I’m nowhere near ready for parenthood like he seemed to be. I never even considered it an option. There’s never been a woman I’d imagined settling down with, let alone having a family. Until Sophie.

I’m still trying to process the news, my brain full of thoughts, but the way Griffin is glowering at me from the other side of the balcony, I decide to put those on pause to focus on him.

Because he’s furious. That’s what I’ve concluded from his pacing.

I don’t want to be here right now, I want to be with Sophie, but I know that if there’s any hope in salvaging our friendship and him accepting me and Sophie together, I need to talk to Griffin. Clear the air.

“You’ve been sleeping with my sister and you got her pregnant? She’s twenty-fucking-two. What the fuck is wrong with you, Hunter?”

I followed him out onto the deck, leaving everyone else inside. I’m wondering if this was a good idea. I’m also wondering if Griffin might try to throw me off the balcony.

“I—” I start to answer but he cuts me off.

“How long has this been going on?” he growls.

“We met in Vegas. At a club. Before she moved here.”

Griffin’s eyes narrow. Even without the details, it’s clear what must have happened between Sophie and me in Vegas.

“When I found out she was your sister, we said we weren’t going to see each other again, but then—”

“Emma has filled me in on your reputation. You’ve told me yourself that you don’t do relationships. So, what was your plan with Sophie? Was she just another woman you were going to discard when you got bored?”

“There was no plan,” I answer honestly.

He laughs sardonically. “I get it. You were just taking it one screw at a time.”

I thought being honest and talking it out would bring Griffin’s anger to a simmer, but with each passing moment, I can see his body tighten, his jaw clench tighter with rage. While I’m focused on his face, his right hook sneaks up on me.

The pain radiates through my jaw and I stumble backwards.

“Fuck.” I push him back. “That’s not what I meant.”

I think about what I’d do if a guy was fucking around with Hannah and got her pregnant. How I’d think the guy was a creep if he was thirteen years older than her.

And I know Griffin is protective of Sophie. Hadn’t I expected this?

Now that it’s clear Griffin wants to pummel me, I decide the best course of action is to defend myself without engaging him.

I look around the deck. All the furniture is placed on the periphery, there’s nothing between us. While we’re both athletes, and I’ve got a few inches on him, Griffin’s five years younger, and a good fifteen pounds heavier. Not to mention the adrenaline that must be coursing through his veins looking at the guy who snuck around behind his back and got his little sister pregnant. I’m well aware my company position means nothing right now.

“She’s twenty-two! You never should have touched her!”
