He lunges at me, but I dodge him, then grab a pillow from the couch and throw it at him. He catches the pillow and tosses it aside.

This is ridiculous. I don’t want to fight him, but I will defend myself.

“It was never like that. I’m aware of our age difference, but she’s a consenting adult.”

He comes at me again. I dodge his tackle, but my shoe gets tangled up in the deck rug and I trip. It’s an easy way for him to gain an advantage and he does. Rolling on top of me, he swings his arm back for another punch. My palm flattens against his fist, stopping it from connecting with my nose.

At this point, it feels like pounding me into dust would be Griffin’s preferable course of action.

I scramble from beneath him, but he swings an arm out, hitting my shin and knocking me back down. My body weight is caught by my bad knee and I hiss in pain.Fuck.

With my knee throbbing now, I desperately want to retaliate, but I swallow my anger.

“Can you calm down and we’ll talk like adults?” I ask.

That doesn’t go over well. Griffin lands a punch at my side and I wheeze, trying to take in air, but his punch counteracts my efforts to breathe.

“And I talked to you about her in Vegas. You knew why Sophie was always busy. She was sneaking around with you!”

“We were waiting to find the right time to tell you.”

Even with his anger, I see his brain working. His eyes narrow with the moment of realization.

“Was she the woman under your desk? The one I walked in on you with?”

I can’t lie. That would only make things worse. But admitting Sophie was on her knees at our office sucking my dick with him only feet away is going to do nothing to assuage Griffin’s anger.

“Yes,” I admit, my body primed for his reaction.

He shakes his head. “I thought we were friends.” Beneath the anger, I can see the disappointment, the hurt.

“We are friends,” I assure him.

“No, a friend wouldn’t go after my little sister.” His jaw is still tight. He lunges again.

“I love her.” I barely get the words out before Griffin’s fist meets my stomach. “Fuck.” I gasp for air, trying to recover from his punch.

The balcony door slides open and I hear Sophie calling from a distance. “Griffin! Stop!”

“What did you say?” He ignores Sophie’s pleas, his focus solely on me.

My insides are burning, but I manage to get the words out. “I’m in love with her.”

Griffin staggers back, my words seeming to temporarily extinguish the fury in him. “You mean that?”

I’m aware of Sophie’s proximity. That this isn’t the scenario in which I want to reveal my feelings for her.

My words are quiet as I look Griffin in the eyes. “I haven’t told her yet, but yeah, I do.”

He moves closer again, but this time, his hands are by his sides.

“I don’t care that you’re my boss. If you hurt her, the company’s going to need a new CEO.”

I nod. “Yeah, I’d expect that.”

Griffin gives me one last hard look before he walks past Sophie and back into the apartment.
