“Glad you’re a fan.”

“I’m a fan of a lot of things. Your boobs being another.”

The sound she makes is half laugh, half sigh.

“What about you? When did you start running?” she asks.

“I was a rower in prep school and college, but we ran for conditioning.”

“A rower, huh? Rowing sounds like such a snobby sport. And at Princeton?” She lets out a low whistle.

I chuckle at her assessment. “I can’t argue with you.”

“Good thing you’re so down to earth now. Living in your Upper West Side penthouse and flying on your private jet.”

“It’s a simple life.”

She giggles, more awake now, and I love the sound. “Do you still row?”

“I get out on the water from time to time, but running is much more accessible these days. And now that I have a running partner, it’s even more enjoyable.”

“We’re running partners now?” she asks.

“Among other things.”

Her voice goes quiet. “Thank you again for inviting me to the ballet. I’m excited.”

“I’ll warn you, I have a track record of not being a great date.”

“I don’t need you to be a great date. I’m there for the ballet, not you.”

I chuckle. “Good to know.”

“Were you nice to Allison tonight?” she asks.

“Nice, sure, but mostly distracted thinking about you.”

She sighs. “You’re not going to the Feldman-Weiser wedding tomorrow, are you?”

“No.”

“Thank God.” She laughs quietly. “I’ll actually be able to focus on my job.”

I know what she means. If she’s in the vicinity, it’s hard to focus on anything else. And now, even when I can’t see her, I could easily talk to her until we both get no sleep tonight.

She exhales, the sound of a stifled yawn.

“You need your sleep. I’ll let you go.”

Another stifled yawn. “Okay.”

“I’ll see you on Tuesday.”

“See you then,” she whispers.

I hang up and toss my phone onto the charger on my nightstand. If anything, talking to Sophie has only made me more alert. More aware that I’ve never enjoyed a woman this much.

I flip over onto my stomach and bury my hands under my pillow. I decide not to analyze it and just enjoy it while it lasts.
