CHAPTER16

Sophie

The consignment shop June takes me to on Monday is a goldmine. The brands are designer yet the prices are reasonable. For the ballet, I find a long, flowy emerald dress that brings out the color of my eyes. I also find a fitted, red dress that I can’t pass up, so I hope there is another occasion to wear it.

“Thanks again for working for me on Friday night,” June says through the dressing room door.

“Of course. I was happy to do it. How was the weekend with your boyfriend?” I ask.

Her sigh carries through the door. “It was good, but Allen wants me to move to Michigan. We’ve been long-distance the entire two years we’ve dated.” She pauses. “I’m not sure that’s what I want. My family and life are here. And it all really depends on what happens with this internship. If I get offered a full-time position, I can’t imagine turning it down.”

June’s mention of the full-time junior assistant positions to be decided at the end of the summer has my stomach fluttering with nerves. I haven’t let myself imagine not getting offered a full-time position at Marion Adler Events. Landing one of those positions is everything I’ve been working for. It’s the next step in my plan.

“I’m sorry.” That’s all I can offer. I don’t have much relationship experience. Zero, in fact.

“Thanks. I’ll figure it out. How was the gala? See anyone famous?”

My mind immediately draws up the memory of Hunter and our secret rendezvous at the gala. While I was technically done with work, it wasn’t professional of me to have sex with him there. On the other hand, it was hands down the most erotic experience of my life.

I’ve been thinking about it all weekend. Even as I worked the Feldman-Weiser wedding on Saturday, I found myself distracted with thoughts of Hunter.

The fear of getting caught while we fought to keep quiet. It added another element to the already explosive sex I’ve experienced with him.

Hunter was afraid he was too rough with me, too demanding and harsh, but I loved the way he made me feel. Wild and free. Like I didn’t have to be in control like I normally am. I don’t normally allow myself to feel that way around other people, but with Hunter, when he’s inside me, for some reason, I let everything go.

“It was fun. I recognized a few Bravo reality stars.”

We take my dresses to the register so I can pay. I didn’t share with June that I was going to the ballet, but that I want to have a few dresses in my closet in case I need to dress up for an event.

“There had to be hot guys in tuxes. That’s my favorite thing about formal events.”

“Yeah,” I laugh. “There were plenty of men in tuxes to eyeball.” My stomach dips recalling Hunter in his tuxedo.

I take the shopping bag from the associate and we exit the store.

“So, what’s your status? Dating anyone?” June asks.

I hesitate, thinking about my arrangement with Hunter, and June picks up on it.

“Oh, there is someone.” Her lips curve in a knowing smile.

“No,” I shake my head adamantly, “I’m still trying to navigate the city and focus on work. Dating is not on my agenda right now.”

“Okay, but if you ever need a wing-woman, I’m your girl.”

“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.”

We get salads to go from a bistro nearby and make our way back to the office.

“How did your first wedding go?” June asks as we walk down the street.

“Honestly, it was like being on a movie set. Not that I know what that’s like, but the price tag seemed in line with that of a movie budget.”

“Isn’t it wild the amount of money some people will spend on a one-day event? I can see a wedding getting expensive, but I’m currently working on a birthday party for a five-year-old. The budget is six months of my rent.”

“Wow.” I blink, thinking about the dollar amount. I’ve assisted a few higher-end weddings when I worked at The Windsor in Las Vegas, but it’s clear that New York City is in a whole other league.

“Where was the wedding at?” June asks.
