I blink at Griffin’s question, trying to clear my head.

“It was amazing. The dancers were so impressive. I mean, I can’t believe the human body can do some of those moves. And we had box seats so we were overlooking the stage. It was magical. Oh, and he showed me around backstage before the show. It was really cool.”

“He?” Emma snags on that tiny detail. “So, you went with a guy?”

“Um, did I say that?” I’m quickly trying to recall exactly what I said during my mindless ramble.

Emma smiles knowingly. “Was it Andrew?”

“No, just a friend,” I say slowly, watching my words this time. “Not that Andrew would be more than a friend, but it wasn’t a date if that’s what you mean.” It was a show, then sex.

“Okay. Whatever you say.” She sighs, realizing I’m not going to be giving any more details.

“I’m glad you’re getting out and doing things. I know you’ve got a whole list of things you want to do and see.” He splits up the eggs among two plates, then turns to me. “Do you want to do Top of the Rock next week? I thought we could sign up for a tour.”

I think about lying and going with Griffin for another tour. I loved it so much that I’d go again, but with a busy work schedule and starting my second job, and hooking up with Hunter, there aren’t enough hours in the day.

“Um, actually, I’ve already been.”

“Oh, that’s cool.” He sits down on the stool beside me, his piping hot eggs wafting their horrid smell in my direction.

“With the same friend?” Emma winks at me over her coffee mug.

My lips twitch at her curiosity.I’m not giving it away that easily.

“I’ve got to get going.” I move to stand, careful not to wince when my tender ass cheek slides against the leather stool. “I’ll see you guys later.”

“See you, Soph.” Griffin nods, taking a bite of his eggs.

“Have a good day!” Emma calls as I leave the kitchen area.

“You, too!” I toss out on my way toward the front door.

I can hear bits of their conversation as I slide on my shoes and reach for my purse.

Emma’s laugh rings out, and Griffin’s deep chuckle follows.

They’re perfect together.

Watching Emma and Griffin, whose affection level is sometimes nauseating mostly because he’s my brother and I don’t want to see him make out with anyone, I see what it’s like to be in a loving relationship. The appeal of having a person that loves you and supports you, and at the same time, wants to maul you against the refrigerator at eight o’clock in the morning because they can’t help themselves.

I’m curious what that would feel like.

Not the refrigerator part, I can imagine that would be hard and cool against my back, but the rest of it.

I tamp down the thought. Relationships are work, right? They require attention and constant nurturing. The only thing I have time to nurture right now is my fledgling career.

I shut the door behind me and make my way to the elevator.

On top of my normal work hours and the weekend wedding schedule, and soon waitressing at The Penrose, I need to start thinking about my internship presentation that’s due at the end of the summer. What I want to present and how I should present it.

My phone buzzes in my purse and I find a text from Hunter.

Hunter:Good morning, beautiful. How’d you sleep?

My stomach flutters with his sweet words. After we had sex again in his bed, I pulled my dress back on and Hunter had his driver take me home.

Sophie:Good, but my ass is sore.
