With some distance between me and Hunter, the panic of being late for work is setting in again. Besides my late entry to the intern meeting on the first day, I’ve never been late.

At the lobby, Hunter’s doorwoman, Francine, waves me over.

“Mr. Cartwright called down about you needing a car service.” She motions to the black car at the curb. “Stefan will take you where you need to go.”

“Thank you so much.”

In the car, I text Hunter.

Sophie:Thank you for the car service.

Hunter:You’re late because of me. And I’m trying to get back in your good graces, so you’ll spend the night again.

Sophie:It’s not your fault I overslept. I’ve been tired lately working two jobs, and working on my blog, and then there’s all the sex we’ve been having…okay, maybe you are to blame.

Hunter:I promise to let you rest up this week…if you come to Lake George with me.

Sophie:If you’re on your best behavior.

Hunter:Scout’s honor.

Me:Were you really a Boy Scout?

Hunter:If I say I was, would you be more inclined to spend the holiday weekend with me?

Sophie:No.

Hunter:Let’s say, I’ve got skills they don’t give merit badges for. AndI know how to light a fire…in your panties.

I roll my eyes at Hunter’s cheesy response. Stefan pulls the car over and before I can finish my text, he’s opening the door for me.

“Thank you,” I tell him and step out onto the curb, clutching my purse and phone.

I’m hustling into the building when a guy on the sidewalk calls out. “Sophie!”

I turn to find one of the baristas from the coffee shop down the block that I frequent with the other interns walking toward me with two trays of coffees in his hands.

“Hey,” I zone in on his nametag, “Aaron. I’m running late so—"

“I know. These are for you.”

I stare at the coffees. “I didn’t order anything yet.”

He looks down at the receipt for the coffees, then back at me. “An order was placed under your name for delivery here.”

My phone buzzes in my hand.

Hunter:I thought coffee for the office would create a smoother landing.

Hunter can’t see me, but I’m smiling and shaking my head.

“Do you need help with these?” Aaron asks.

“No, I got it. Thank you.”

I reach in my purse and grab out cash for a tip, then take the trays from him and move toward the elevator.

Twenty minutes later, I’ve distributed coffee to Sabrina at reception, Marietta and Johnathan, and a few of my fellow interns, who were excited for the Monday morning caffeine boost and said nothing about my late arrival. June isn’t at her desk, so I leave a coffee by her computer, then I grab the last one off the tray and take a sip. Ahh. That’s when I notice the message on the side of the cup.
