Lake George?

Jesus, he’s even recruiting the barista in his efforts.

I reach for my phone to text Hunter back.

Sophie:Coffee was a lifesaver. THANK YOU!!!!

Hunter:I’m wooing you to Lake George.

Sophie:I’m picking up on that.

Hunter:Or maybe I’m just a nice guy.

Sophie:You? Nice? Ha! My sore ass tells a different story.

Hunter:You love getting spanked. It makes you so fucking wet. And since I’m such a nice guy, I always lick up the mess you make between your thighs.

Reading Hunter’s words, I nearly choke on my coffee. That conversation turned dirty real fast.

Just then, June appears at her desk.

“You okay?” she asks.

“Yup.” I pat my chest. “My coffee went down the wrong pipe.”

“Is this for me?” She lifts the coffee cup.

“Yes, my treat. Happy Monday!”

“Thanks. How was your weekend?”

“It was the best,” I say, then realize I shouldn’t be sharing anything about me and Hunter.

“You sound all dreamy and whimsical. What did you do?”

“Um,” I hesitate. For the first time since I started this fling with Hunter, I wish I could talk about him to someone. To gush about the amazing Sunday we had together. Because yesterday was purely magical. I’m about to give June the details, minus who Hunter is, when my phone buzzes.

Griffin:I’m trying to be cool here, like you asked, but I need to know that you’re okay.

My stomach falls. Shit. I forgot to respond to his text yesterday. I got busy with Hunter, then fell asleep at Hunter’s.

When I asked Griffin to give me space, to treat me like a roommate and not be watching my every move, I didn’t think about how it would make him feel. The amount of stress that not knowing where I am or if I’m coming home would cause him.

I quickly respond.

Sophie:All good. At work now. Stayed with a friend last night.

Griffin:Okay. Can we do lunch this week? Or dinner? Just the two of us?

Sophie:Yes! Let’s do that.

We make plans for dinner tomorrow night, then I put my phone away.

“Sorry, my brother was texting me. I haven’t been home a lot lately so he was checking in.”

“Ah, so there is someone. Spill the deets.”

“It’s just fun, nothing serious.” I try to keep my smile small, but thinking about Hunter, it spreads without my permission. “Okay, alotof fun.”
