If anyone will tell me what the fuck happened here, it’s them. They won’t lie to me.

I’m exhausted and half tempted to curl up on the soft hill for a nap when I finally spot Zeke standing with Raphael and Theo. I sure as hell didn’t expect to see them together.

They push through the crowd, their steps faltering when they see me.

I tilt my head, wondering what the fuck they’re staring at when Raphael speaks out, answering my internal question. Shit. I didn’t mean to send that thought to him. I’m a fucking mess.

“Well, sunshine. It seems your nickname fits.” He smiles, but I don’t feel any better. In fact, now I’m even more confused than before.

My mind spins, pistons firing as his words begin to click, but before I can put everything together, Zeke’s husky voice rings out.

“Your wings, hummingbird. They’re … gold.”

I want to laugh, because his words don’t make sense. My wings aren’t—

Sure enough, when I glance over my shoulder, I find my wings are no longer gray. They’re golden, almost glowing against the light from the setting sun.

What the hell?

A few professors have now joined the fray at the base of the hill. No one approaches me and the pile of ashes at my feet. They only whisper and stare.

As if I wasn’t different enough already …
