I take a deep breath, trying to calm down and access the easygoing charm I’ve perfected as I approach my new obsession. “Is this seat taken?”

My stunning angel tilts her head back, our eyes locking instantly. She says nothing, the smile playing on her lips drawing my attention.

Her friend kicks her beneath the table. “Uh, no. Go for it. I’m Dina, this is Hayliel. What’s your name?”

Hayliel… I want to taste her name on my tongue, but more than that, I want to tasteher. Everything around me vanishes until she’s all I see. Whatever charm I might have had before now is gone, and I’m okay with it. A girl like her deserves far better than what I’ve given anyone else.

“I’m Raphael, but my friends call me Raph.” My words are only for Hayliel. I can’t seem to shift my gaze from her dark-blue eyes, fully captivated by the specks of gold and silver within their depths.

“Did you bring all that food for the table or is that all for you?” she asks, her melodic voice a touch lower than I expected.

“Well, technically when I piled it on my plate it was all for me, but if you want some, I’d be more than happy to give it to you.”

She snorts a laugh, blushing as she reaches forward to steal one of the tiny pastries from my plate. While she chews, she releases a moan that shakes my entire fucking being, and I can’t help the little jump my dick makes in my pants.

“They don’t make food like this outside the university, I swear,” she says, holding me in a trance as she licks the crumbs from her fingers.

“Damn. You truly have the voice of an angel. Do you know that?”

Her eyes flick to mine once more, her lips held in a flat line which tells me I’ve definitely just blown any chance I might have had.

“That was so fucking lame, dude,” the other chick, Dee or maybe Dani, says, breaking the silence. “Of course she does. She’s an angel. Everyone here is.”

“I’m normally much more charming, I assure you.” Cupping the back of my neck, I try to figure out how to salvage this fucking mess. This can’t be happening. I finally meet the angel of my dreams, only to end up being the weird, creepy guy she’ll likely avoid for the rest of the semester.

“You’re probably just hungry.” Hayliel pops a grape into her mouth, smiling at me. Anyone else would have sent me packing, but for some reason. she doesn’t. It’s my lucky fucking day.

“You’re probably right. How about I shut up and eat, and you can tell me how you two met?” I tear my eyes from hers, forcing them to the plate of food in front of me. This is exactly the distraction I need, and if I can get them talking, maybe it’ll save me from any further embarrassment. I take a healthy bite of waffle, but I barely notice the sweet flavor. I’m too distracted by the goddess in front of me to care what’s in my mouth.

“Hayles and I have been best friends for years. Thank the Archangels that we wound up in the same house here. We’re in—“

“On the same floor. We’re neighbors.” Hayliel gives her friend a look that I can’t read, but I ignore it and take the opening.

“Oh, that’s cool. My best friend goes here too, but we’re in different houses. He’s bunked at the Knowledge house, which suits him to a fucking tee.”

“I hear their library is incredible! I’d like to see it someday,” Hayliel replies between bites of her wrap.

I continue chewing, the waffle on my plate almost gone, while I think about her words. If she hasn’t seen the library, does that mean she isn’t at the Knowledge house? It’s possible she just hasn’t explored yet, I suppose. She isn’t in the Power house, that I know for certain. With how drawn I am to her, I’d definitely have noticed.

Neither of them wears the school uniform, but that’s not entirely out of the ordinary given the school year hasn’t officially started yet. But the way she dodged my question makes me think she’s Fallen. Not that I care either way. Society might like to separate us and play us against one another, but I’m not about that. Regardless, if she doesn’t want me to know yet, I won’t push it.

“I could ask my friend to show you around, if you want. But be warned … he can literally talk about history for hours, so you might not escape.”

Her eyes brighten until they damn near glow with excitement. “Oh, yes! If you don’t mind, of course.”

“We’ve gotta go, babe.” Her friend stands, turning to me and smiling for what might be the first time since I sat down. “It was nice to meet you. Make sure you’re eating enough food though, yeah? Helps the whole charm thing.” She pats my arm, then walks off.

Hayliel stands, stealing one more pastry from my tray. “See you around, Raphael.”

“No doubt about that,” I reply, but she’s already gone. Letting out a long sigh, I try not to let it bother me that she called me Raphael instead of Raph. It’s only our first meeting. That’s all. And it’s not like it means she won’t ever do it.

Maybe you’re just hungry.I replay her words and can’t help the groan that builds in my throat as I push the tray away and plant my face on the cool table. I know damn well that food has nothing to do with my odd behavior. It’s her. Just being near her had all my wires crossing. Pretty angels aren’t exactly uncommon. It’s built into our DNA. So, what is it about her that has me so worked up?

I pick up my things and head back to Theo, avoiding Seraphina and her pushy gaggle of friends. Defeat rears its ugly head, scratching at my insides until it hurts.

He’s eaten most of the food from his tray, his slate lying face down on the table, so he notices my discomfort right away.

“How did it go with the pretty angel?” he asks, watching as I collapse into the chair beside him.
