After a brief hesitation, I slip by him, then head in the direction of my cubicle. The only thing I’ve bothered keeping here is my laptop case, so I grab that, leaving behind the company-issued laptop I barely touched.

Back in the elevator, I hit the button for the ground level, noticing the one for the sixth floor already lit up.

“So what was it you wanted to talk to me about?”

“Your meetings with my wife…”

Curling my fingers, I slowly form my free hand into a tight fist.

“Who approved those?”

Approved them? Why would a meeting with Lex need approval?

I look over at him, but he’s focused on the doors, his chin lifted like a king on his throne.

“Uh…” I shake my head. “Lenox, I believe.”

He makes a noise in his chest, but doesn’t say anything else on the subject, just asks, “Any plans for the weekend?”

As I face forward too, I try to think of the most mundane married-thing possible.

“The wife wants to go furniture shopping.”

“Where are you thinking?”

“We’ll probably go down to the city. Make a whole getaway out of it.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Kordin turn his head my way before he murmurs, “Must be in the air.”

“Furniture shopping?”

“Travel. My wife…she’s an angel.” He chuffs out a laugh, and I glance at him again, but he immediately rights his face. “Even while playing nurse to me at the hospital, she didn’t miss a beat here.”

My hold on my bag’s strap tightens. Lex wasn’t his nurse. If anything, his wife was tending tomyneeds.

“It really is a mystery how she does it all. I had to coerce her into taking a break for a weekend away.”

A silence surrounds us as I replay every word Lex said to me today. She didn’t even hint at going out of town with Kordin. If there was anything she could rub in my face, it’d be that. A fuck with Kordin, especially the way he does it—all impersonal and shit—I could write that off. But her taking a trip with him? Willingly? That’s harder to swallow because I didn’t just claim Lex’s pussy. I claimed all of her.

What if he wants to reconcile?

“In the city?”

“No, no. The Catskills.”

That’s a very extensive, very rural area. What if he confronts her about the money she’s stealing and she kills him?

What if he kills her?

Watching the falling numbers, I ask as casually as I can, “You two getting a cabin up there?”

“Lenox in a cabin?” Another laugh, this one unmistakably phony. “It’s nothing but extravagance for that woman. She has… Well, let’s just say, my wife’s acquired quite the taste for luxury over the years.”

I fight to keep a neutral expression. She wouldn’t have been exposed to her current hollow lifestyle, and probably never would’ve been, if it weren’t for Kordin. So if Lex is a monster, she’s the monster he created.

“She wouldn’t even consider anything less than five-star accommodations, so I set her up in a lavish resort.”

I side-eye him. “You’re not going?”
