However, they were not totally invisible. There was still some danger of being spotted.

Hruk scanned his eyes around the horizon, searching for any sign of a nith patrol or some other natural danger.

But it was gods-rotted hard to concentrate with the female slung over his shoulder.

Her naked backside was mere inches from Hruk’s face. That backside was soft, round, and plump, and it made Hruk’s stick thicken with desire.

Then there was the scent. The fragrant mouthwatering scent of her hole, wafting into Hruk’s nostrils, streaming into his lungs, setting his blood on fire with primal urges he still did not fully understand. All he knew was that he wanted to throw her down right here and take her from behind on all fours.

That wasn’t going to happen, however.

Hruk had already overstepped last night. Afterward, when he had distanced himself, it had upset Serenity. She hadn’t known how much it had hurt Hruk too.

Now the tiny human shifted and squirmed on the ukkur’s shoulder as he raced across the landscape.

“Be still,” he growled.

Serenity said something in her weird, bubbling language. Hruk, of course, did not understand, so he did not respond. A moment later, the ukkur felt the human’s little fingers attaching the nith language machine to his ear. The human spoke again, and this time her voice was accompanied by a translation in a monotone nith voice.

“I need to pee.”

Fair enough. Hruk was feeling the call as well.

There was just one problem. Their location at the present moment was far too exposed for Hruk’s liking. However, there was a cluster of large round boulders up ahead that would provide a good place to rest briefly and take care of the necessary bodily functions.

Serenity, however, could not see this. She was facing backward on Hruk’s shoulder. Hruk doubted she would understand his ukkur words if he tried to tell her. He could try to give her the translating device back, but it was too much trouble. Besides, they didn’t have much farther to go.

She would just have to hold it for another minute.

But the fiery little human did not understand, and when Hruk did not stop running, she spoke again in an irritated voice.

“If you don’t put me down, I’m just going to pee all over you.”

Hruk smirked to himself. The human was brave. Hruk was a full grown ukkur, many times Serenity’s size, but that didn’t stop the tiny human from being defiant.

Still, as much as Hruk admired the woman’s attitude, he did not wish to be pissed on.

He snarled fiercely, letting Serenity know there would be hell to pay if she followed through on what she had said. His non-verbal threat seemed to work. The human continued to hold her water.

She trembled on Hruk’s shoulder like a frightened animal, and Hruk felt bad for scaring her. But what else could he do?

Soon enough they reached the cluster of boulders, and Hruk came to a halt in the shade of the largest stone. He gave one last quick glance around to make sure there were no nith lurking on the horizon, then he hoisted Serenity off his shoulder and set her down on her own two feet. Her legs were still weak, and Hruk kept her steady as she found her balance.

“Thank you,” she said, not meeting his eyes.

She was still angry about how things had ended last night. Good. Let her be angry. Anything to keep her at a safe distance, emotionally at least.

Hruk took the translator device off his ear and placed it on Serenity’s

“We will stop here, but not for long. It’s best to keep moving so we don’t get caught. Go ahead and take care of your business, then we will resume our journey.”

Serenity nodded.

She walked deeper into the shadows between the tall boulders, sighing softly at the blessed coolness the shade provided. Then she went around the edge of a boulder and disappeared from Hruk’s sight.

His heart instantly jumped with concern.

He did not like having the fragile little creature out of his sight. The wastelands were not a safe place for a human like her. The nith were not the only thing they had to look out for. The wastelands were home to many creatures—dangerous creatures adapted to the harsh environment.
