But Wey breathed out, “I’m close.”

And Theon said, “Oh goddess, I’m coming.”

And then my world exploded in a burst of pleasure, my veins lighting up with bliss. Everything seemed to white out for a moment as my body quaked, as Wey’s body trembled, and as Theon gasped for breath and moaned.

When I finally came back to myself, I leaned into Wey, wrapping my arms around his waist and resting my forehead on the side of his neck, inhaling and exhaling loudly. Wey leaned back into me and laced his fingers with one of my hands while rubbing Theon’s back with the other. We stayed there for a few minutes before I kissed Wey’s skin, pulled out of him, and went to grab the basin and cloth.

I kissed Wey’s lips and gave his beard a small tug before I cleaned him and Theon up. Wey lifted Theon so I could remove the soiled sheet from Theon’s seed. We quickly put clean ones down, and then we all lay together on the bed with our little mage in the middle.

Wey wrapped around Theon’s back, and from the rhythmic breathing, I was pretty sure he’d fallen asleep before I’d even fully settled in the bed. It didn’t surprise me. Neither of us had been sleeping well since Theon had left, both too worried about him to ever get a good night’s sleep. It was no wonder Wey had fallen asleep the moment we had him back in our arms.

Theon lay on his side, facing me, a small smile on his face. He ran his fingertips over my cheek and whispered, “Hi.”

I sent a small smile back. “Hi.”

“You’re gorgeous.”

I snorted. “Not as pretty as you, but thanks.”

He rolled his eyes. “You’re prettier.”

That made me laugh. “Are you sure your eyes still work because there’s no way that’s true.”

He bopped my nose with a snicker. “We’ll just have to agree to disagree.”

Shaking my head, I playfully nibbled on his fingers, then kissed his palm, earning me another one of Theon’s sweet smiles.

“Goddess, I missed you so much, Nica.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t have left, then.” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, I regretted them. Theon tensed, his entire body going rigid, and I closed my eyes, holding in a sigh. All the peace we’d had between us was utterly destroyed with that one sentence.

“I’m sorry, Nica. I’m so damn sorry. You have no idea how much I wish I would’ve—”

“What? Waited until I at least fucking woke up?” I asked angrily. “Made sure I wasn’t fucking dead? Made sure Weylyn wasn’t left here alone? That he didn’t have to pick up all the pieces of everything you broke?”

Theon flinched with every question I asked.

It was a long time before he quietly said, “I didn’t want to hurt you again, Nica. If I could hurt you—of all people—like that, there was no telling what else my magic might do. I couldn’t put you or anyone else at risk like that.”

“But you could put Florin? And Braz?”

He flinched again. “That’s not what I meant.”

“You know what? Save it, Theon. I don’t want to talk about this right now. I… I just want to get some sleep.” I gestured to Wey, who was somehow still sleeping. “You know why he’s sleeping so deeply, even with us arguing? Because he’s been worried sick about you for months.Months, Theon. The two of us haven’t gotten a decent night’s sleep in all that time, too worried that the next time Jedrek strolled into camp, it’d be to tell us you were dead.”

“Nica, I—”

“No. I don’t want to hear your excuses.” I stood up and found my clothes on the floor, pulling my pants on before heading for the door.

Theon sat up. “Where are you going?”

“Out.”

“Nica, please don’t go.” I didn’t stop until he added a pathetic, “Please.”

Halting my steps, I closed my eyes but didn’t turn back to face him.

“I-I’m so s-sorry, Nica. I-I know I h-hurt you.” He was crying now, and it wasn’t fair that it made me feel guilty. He was the one who’d messed up, not me. I shouldn’t have to feel bad for being upset with him. “I n-never in a million y-years meant to hurt you. Th-that’s the last thing I wanted.”
