Unsure what to say or do, the man looks Dreyden up and down, then looks toward me. He opens his mouth to speak, but quickly shuts it when Dreyden steps closer.

“Why are you here?” Dreyden’s voice is growing impatient.

The man begins to shake, quivering in place as the strength of Dreyden’s intimidation keeps him from finding words.

Annoyed with Dreyden’s alpha personality and feeling sorry for the man, I brush Dreyden’s arm, nudging him out of my way as I step closer to the man. “What is your name?” I ask, my voice gentle.

The man stops shaking as he focuses on my face, temporarily forgetting about the deadly high lord standing beside me.

“My, my name is Arryn,” he forces the words out. “Who are you? Where am I?”

I feel Dreyden inhale beside me, ready to speak, but I shoot him a warning glare, shutting his mouth quickly. If we want to figure out who this man is, Dreyden needs to stay quiet.

“My name is Adeena, and you’re in Fire Court. Where are you going?”

Arryn whispers my name under his breath, leaning forward and touching his chin as he goes deep in thought.

He seems lost for words once more, so I ask again, “Where are you going?”

His eyes meet mine, and I see what appears to be pain behind the silver irises. “I don’t know…” he trails off deep in thought again.

Irritated, Dreyden’s voice is deep beside me, “You don’t know or you don’t remember?”

Arryn’s words are unsteady as they leave his mouth, “I… don’t know.” He watched Dreyden get even more agitated, forcing him to stumble through his thoughts. “I can’t remember. Both. I don’t know.”

Dreyden and I look toward each other, unsure what is wrong with Arryn. Dreyden looks mostly annoyed, but he clearly doesn’t have a clue either.

“Let’s take him to a healer?” I ask Dreyden. “Maybe one of them will know what’s wrong with him. It looks like a spell of some sort.”

Nodding in agreement, Dreyden opens a portal.

Arryn jumps back, frightened by the inferno of flames opening out of thin air. I grab Arryn’s arm with a reassuring smile.

“It’s okay, Arryn. We’re going to take you to one of our healers. I think you’re under some sort of spell, and I want them to look at you. I need you to walk through this portal with me. It’s the fastest way back to the castle.”

“Castle?” he asks as he stares into the portal.

I pull on his arm, inching him closer to the opening we need to walk through. Dreyden steps behind us, ready to push Arryn through if he doesn’t hurry up.

“Yes, a castle. We live there,” I say as I continue to move him closer to the portal.

Dreyden steps closer, and I’m shooting him warning glares with my eyes. If he pushes Arryn through the portal I’m going to be pissed. Arryn is in a fragile state of mind right now, and he doesn’t need a high lord shoving him around, even if that high lord is my mate.

Impatient as always, but more gentle than normal, Dreyden waves his hand through the air, moving the portal closer to us. We’re only a step away now.

Arryn’s eyes grow wider and wider as the portals nip at my back. “You can trust me,” I whisper, urging him to take the final step.

Looking between the portal and me once more, Arryn sighs, “You said your name is Adeena?”

“Yes, Arryn, my name is Adeena.”

He nods with Dreyden at his back, basically breathing down his throat to get going. “Okay, let’s go.”

Without hesitation, I tug him the rest of the way into the portal. He gasps, holding his breath like I’m pulling him underwater.

I hear Dreyden scoff as we disappear into the flames.

What’s his problem?
