They grinned at each other a little, and it made him feel better. That she was coming around, and she just wanted some time. That she wasn’t afraid to tell him that he was her hero. Maybe it was juvenile, but it did make him feel good, to know that she would let him rescue her. It made him feel even better to think that she needed him. Because he was starting to get the feeling that he really needed her.

Chapter 23

“That was so nice ofSunday to take the girls down to the beach,” Jubilee said as she worked in the kitchen with Lana. Lana had become a dear friend, despite their age differences, and Sunday and Clara had both become almost as close.

Some days Jubilee wished she had been born into the Landry family.

But then, she wouldn’t have Matt.

Whatever it was that she had with him. He texted her every day, and typically called her sometime in the evening. They’d gone on three more horseback rides, and probably would’ve gone on more if all of his horses hadn’t been rented out the other days.

“That girl. She has her hands full with Quinn. He is about as rambunctious as any kid could be. But she lets that be her excuse not to move on with her life.”

“Because she has a child?” Jubilee said, rolling out the pie dough for the quiche they were going to have for breakfast in the morning.

“Maybe it’s fear. She’s just... She lets the what-ifs get to her.”

Jubilee didn’t say anything for a moment. She let the what-ifs get to her. Or the why nots.

“You just can’t let fear run your life sometimes...all the time, most of the time, we just don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. We can’t. Yet we want to have everything planned out down to the tiniest little detail. But that’s not the way God works.”

“No. He wants us to walk by faith, not by sight.”

“Exactly. And yet, walking by faith is a lot harder than what it sounds like. Because, we let fear dictate our choices.”

She was letting fear dictate her choices. At least with Matt. She had asked him for time, and he’d happily given it to her. Or at least it seemed like he was happy. Regardless, she wasn’t quite sure where to move forward now. She was happy stuck in limbo. Although she’d like to have more with Matt, the idea of jumping into another relationship was scary enough that she was content to just sit back.

“I forgot to tell you that Eva was moving out.”

“Really? I hoped I would get to see her this evening. She hasn’t said anything to me about what she’s doing with the festival, and it’s only five days away.”

“I haven’t really talked to her much since we saw her with that lawyer at Davis and Kim’s party. I think the whole town was mad at her, but I got the feeling that she was going somewhere with him.”

“Really?”

That was so hard for Jubilee to comprehend. She couldn’t imagine jumping from relationship to relationship and dragging her child with her.
