“Oh, Ell! We’ll have such a great time! Come on, we’ll find you something to wear. Then you’re going to let me do your hair and makeup.”

“Why can’t I go like this?”

Lizzie slapped her hands on her hips. “Because you have to shake things up every now and then. You look beautiful just as you are, but honey, we’re going out for fun. F. U. N. That means we’re going to highlight our assets, so our night will be even better. I bet we don’t even have to pay for one drink.” She batted her long lashes.

“Fine. I’ll do it. But please, I beg you, don’t make me look like a hooker.”

The Barnacle sat at the end of a wharf, lined with flickering tiki torches, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It was decorated in a nautical theme, with gleaming, wood floors. There was a full bar inside and another bar outside on the patio. Ellie’s mouth watered, as she saw a waiter go by with a tray of loaded nachos.

“Please tell me we can have some of those.” Ellie nudged Lizzie.

“Honey, you can have anything your heart desires.” Lizzie hooked her arm through hers. “By the way, I think the ER is going to be busy tonight.”

“The ER? What on earth are you talking about?”

“The men in here are getting whiplash from trying to check us out. We do look smokin’ hot.”

Ellie smothered a giggle. “You’re wicked.”

“I’m honest. We look amazing. You’re in a pair of sexy heels, tight, leather pants and a hot pink T-shirt, with a plunging neckline that shows off your assets quite nicely. Then there’s your stunning hair and makeup. You look like a model, Ell. And then there’s moi.” Lizzie did a twirl. “This dress if fabulous! Of course, it’s a micro mini that’s so mini, I might need a hot pack to keep my coochie warm. But I look damn good in it. Oh, oh, over there!” Lizzie pointed to an empty table in the corner by the dance floor. “Hurry, before somebody takes it. Swing your ass a lot. It will distract everyone.”

“You have sex on the brain tonight, don’t you?” Ellie ran behind Lizzie, as she made a beeline for the table.

“Honey, I have sex on the brain every night.” Lizzie sat down, grinning from ear to ear. “It’s just tonight, I’m going to do something about it.”

Ellie’s nerves took flight. “You won’t leave me?”

“Not on your life. But it doesn’t mean I can’t sneak into the bathroom for a little tappity-tap-tap.”

“You wouldn’t dare.” Ellie’s mouth dropped open.

“I would.” Lizzie leaned in close. “And I have before.”

“You hussy.” Ellie laughed.

“Guilty!” Lizzie swept her hair back, put her elbows on the table and thrust out her ample chest. “Time for the fun to begin.”

CHAPTER THREE

“Take her out on one date. Just one.”

Colt Garrett pushed his chair back from his desk and threw his hands in the air. “I’m trying to finish payroll… in peace, I might add. You are aware that your parents named you wrong, don’t you?”

Serenity rolled her eyes. “Not this again.”

“Here, let me Google it for you.” Colt punched a few keys. “Ah, here it is. The definition of serenity. It says right here, in black and white, serenity is the state of being calm, peaceful, untroubled. Those are words I wouldneveruse to describe you.”

“Deflect all you want, buddy.”

Colt chewed on the inside of his cheek, giving Serenity a glare that would have most people running for cover. Not her. She shot a bladed stare right back at him. One of the best things he ever did was hire her to be the manager of his bar. She exceled at her job and kept everything running smoothly.

“A relationship is not something I’m interested in.” He exhaled. “Climbing into bed with a woman for sex? Yes. Staying with one long term? Umm, no.”

“Erma is a nice girl. She comes from a good family with strong moral values. She has two master’s degrees and is finishing her residency at Maine General in Portland to become a neurologist. She’s smart as a whip. Solid. She’s nothing like your ex, Maleficent.”

“Maleficent? Really?” Colt laughed. “You think Cherry was a powerful, evil fairy?”

“Listen, big guy. First thing, you can pick on my name all you want, but no one should be named after a fruit. Second thing, yes. She was and is an evil person. The woman is a taker and a user. You deserve better. I just don’t get why you can’t pick the right one. So let me try.”
