My gaze drifts from Matteo to Vito, before settling on Enzo, as realization washes over them.

“Fuck.” The curse comes from Matteo who hangs his head low, hiding the emotions I’m sure are consuming him, but we don’t have time for that, not when Enzo is bleeding out like this. “Call her, Matteo. The sooner, the better,” I state, before reaching into Vito’s blazer pocket to retrieve my cell phone I gave him earlier.

“W-who a-are you c-calling?” Enzo stutters out, still just as nosey when he’s bleeding out, but I don’t get a chance to respond as the call is answered.

“If it isn’t my new favorite person. Please don’t tell me my brothers have fucked up and you're injured or something ridiculous like that because I will literally skin them alive.”

Valentina.

“I-I’m down, Valentina. Wren battles better than us,” Enzo states, and my chest squeezes with worry at the mention of him being injured.

Matteo rises to his feet, stepping toward the exit as I wave my hand at Vito for him to get Enzo, and he does just that. We don’t have more than a few minutes left to get out of here before something blows or we start choking on the smoke.

“I never doubted my girl for a second,” she replies with pride, making me shake my head in disbelief. “Are you going to be okay, E?” she adds, finally getting to the important part, and he half chuckles, half scoffs in response.

“He’ll be good, Valentina, I won’t accept anything less,” I interject, rushing a few steps ahead of Vito to hold the door open for him, before racing toward the SUV that’s still waiting idly for us. The driver’s eyes widen in shock as Matteo points toward us, but I turn my attention away from him as I focus on the cell in my hands. “What matters now, Valentina, is how we move next.”

“Shit, hit me with it.”

A tight smile graces my lips at her willingness as I step back to let Vito climb into the SUV with Enzo in his arms, placing him down across a row of seats as he grunts in agony.

“They knew we were coming, V, from what I can tell, they wanted us to,” I explain as Matteo climbs into the vehicle and slams the door shut behind him, nodding at me in confirmation that he did as I said.

I relax a little in my seat, hopeful that we’re going to get the help Enzo needs in time.

“Why?”

“Because it looks like they got wind of Torres’s funeral and they’re going to hit that too, in an attempt to bring down the De Luca empire.” I pinch the bridge of my nose in anger as Vito curses and Matteo slams his fist into the door beside him.

“Over my dead fucking body,” Valentina bites out, anger evident in every word.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. But I’m going to need you to listen very closely to everything I say because you’ll have to get the ball rolling before we even get back on the fucking plane,” I state, my brain going a mile a minute as I try to piece together all the information we have.

“Yes, boss. You tell me what to do and I’ll do it.”

My gaze falls to Enzo as he groans on his spot, and I drop to my knees on the floorboard and shuffle toward him as the SUV takes off toward the airport.

His heart races against my palm as I speak to Valentina. I just need him to not bleed out on me, not when we’re this close, not when I care this much.

Every step we take now is for the De Luca family, and that means all of them have to be fucking alive.

Including him.

ENZO

Fuck.

Every inch of my body hurts like a bitch. I’ve never felt pain like this, and I’ve been through some shit. Closing my eyes, I groan, attempting to calm my breathing as I continue to put pressure on the hoodie that’s covering my wound. The leather of the SUV seats offer me little support or comfort as I fail to release any tension from my body.

I’m very aware I’m losing a lot of blood, but I’m helpless to it.

Grinding my teeth, I take another deep breath before blinking my eyes open. I need to see her again, if this is how I go, if this is how I end, then I’m willing to accept it as long as my last vision is of Wren.

I settle my gaze on her, not missing the pain and worry that flashes in her eyes, before she suddenly drops to her knees before me. I don’t utter a word, letting her come closer. She places her palm against my chest as she runs her eyes over me from head to toe.

I’m in awe of her.
