“Iorderedyou to ensure that didn’t happen,” he hissed.

“I had an entire legion hidden in the Asric Pass, Your Majesty.”

“Then what happened?”

“They didn’t travel through the pass, Your Majesty.”

“Then howdidthey travel?”

“By some kind of strange, fae ship we believe. It traveled much quicker than anticipated. Our people were lying in wait close to the shoreline.”

“And?” Sabium’s voice was very quiet. The general’s face was almost bloodless now.

“And we killed one of the fae.”

“One of them?”

“Yes.”

“And the others?”

“They slaughtered our men.”

“All of them?”

“All except one. He ran for his pigeon so he could send a message to us. The…the Bloodthirsty Prince was there. And the others.”

“And the girl?”

“She disappeared.”

Not for the first time, I wished I’d had my own spies infiltrate the legion Tymedes had sent. But I’d heard many theories about the strange workings of the hybrid kingdom. If the heir had disappeared, it was likely she’d made it to that kingdom.

Sabium sat back on his throne, his brow furrowed. For one moment, I saw the man I’d thought I might one day fall in love with. The one who had always seemed to be thinking deeply.

Then, I’d assumed those thoughts would mean great things for this kingdom.

But I had been a stupid girl.

“It’s time to create repercussions for anyone who attempts to help the girl. She will learn that it’s not just her life in the balance. She cares so much about innocent lives?” He smiled. “Send the iron guards to her village.”

My mind whirled. If the hybrid heir was broken by Sabium’s actions, she would never last long enough to do what I needed her to do.

“There will be consequences to this,” I murmured.

Sabium spared me a glance. “Your point?”

I swallowed, choosing my words carefully. “There are those in that village who have remained loyal to you. If you choose not to spare them, others may question their own loyalty.”

He smiled. “It won’t bemypeople who attack that village. It will be the hybrid heir and her little friends.” Sabium got to his feet, ignoring the advisers who immediately bowed. He strolled toward the door. I didn’t release the breath I was holding until he was gone.

Then I slowly got to my feet.

“Another headache, Your Majesty?”

I went still, my gaze finding Tymedes. I searched his face, looking for some hint that he knew my plans.

Nothing but polite interest.
