“Sillah ovim rett warum.”

The handprint on my wrist burned.

The magic in my chest swelled.

I gasped at the pain, at the intensity—and then watched helplessly as everything faded around me, until the world itself was gone.

And perhaps I was gone too.

Chapter26

Kierden

Iwas covered in blood as I spun and slashed, fighting as one with my bonded esu and his mate.

Death and I had never fought a battle we couldn’t win, but perhaps we’d finally found one.

At least when I passed, I would do so fighting for my female.

The Beast was gaining ground on us, wounding us more than we were wounding him, without waning in the slightest despite his own blood loss.

He was a monster, created by magic and fueled by it too. I was simply a warrior, honed through battle but kept alive by the blood and ice in my veins, the warring of life and death.

A whisper sounded behind me—one I shouldn’t have heard with my focus trained on the fight. Nissa’s voice, softer and weaker than it should’ve been.

“Sillah ovim rett warum.”

Time slowed—and then went still.

Fierce pain burned through my palm—and then Nissa’s magic burst to life in my chest, over my skin, and through my blood. It cleansed the dark magic of the brand on my hand as it knitted with mine, her life and my death.

Battle cries echoed through the jungle as my warriors launched into battle. I didn’t know who had woken them, or how they’d found us. I didn’t have time to be glad they were there, either.

Because as they charged the Beast, I staggered backward. I could feel the fading consciousness of my mate through my mind… and all the way to my damned soul.

She was dying.

My mate was dying.

Nissawas dying.

There was no time to think.

No time to consider my options, or pray to any of the lost gods who might still be listening.

I shoved through the mass of my warriors until I reached her. As I dropped to my knees, I didn’t let myself look at her broken body, her bleeding wounds, or the sickly paleness of her tan skin.

There wasn’t time for that either.

I sliced through the place my neck met my shoulder with one hand as I hauled her upright with the other, and dragged her face to my bleeding wound.

“Bite me, Nissa,”I snarled into her mind and ear with every bit of force and power I had.

She didn’t respond.

I refused to accept that.

Diving into our bond, I found the place our minds met. There was a thin wisp of a wall separating us, but I cut through it ruthlessly.
