I couldn’t wait to keep practicing with it, to see if I could learn even a shred of control.

It was a simple thing, really, to look forward to a future. But it was a simple thing I’d never had before—and one I would cherish for the rest of my life.

Epilogue

Kierden—many years later

“Swords out, swords out, swords out,” I bellowed at the hoard of small, yelling warriors who sprinted through the castle’s hallway. Our children loved running around like wild animals—and we loved watching them grin like madmen.

The violent events we held to keep the peace every year were going on in the stadium, but Nissa, Kaelle, and Laeli had convinced the other kings and I to spend the day watching our children run around together instead.

It hadn’t taken much convincing at all.

“The gourd king has risen!” Ravv barked, as we jogged behind the kids. “Go, go, go!”

We came around the corner, and found Nissa’s forehead wrinkled furiously. Her hands were held out toward the massive yellow gourd as she focused her magic on it. Control was still a struggle at times, but she had figured it out for the most part.

All of the kids started hacking at the large, squishy vegetable with their dull icy swords, shouting insults at the“smelly, rabid beast”.

I pushed my magic toward Nissa, and she flashed me a quick smile as she took a hold of it. The gourd king swelled even larger, growing just as lopsided as I knew she was hoping it would.

The kids yelled with renewed fury and swung harder and faster, throwing in some punches and kicks too.

“He’s falling!” one of my boys hollered. “Harder!”

I tugged Nissa away from the massive vegetable, pulling her back flush against my front just in time for our little warriors to defeat their monster.

Cheers of victory erupted from them, and they started jumping, dancing, and laughing about the king they had slain.

“You’re so damn perfect,”I murmured to Nissa, brushing a kiss to her cheek.

“I know, I know,”she teased me.

I squeezed her tightly, thanking the veil that the Beast had sent me running toward the little human who had brought me more happiness than I could’ve ever imagined.
