Eisley pushed the plate back to Laeli. “I’ll have the kitchen make her something.” She strode away, leaving me alone with the other human.

“So what’s your power?” Laeli asked, pushing the plate back to me.

I didn’t hesitate to grab one of the strange-looking pastries off it. “Plants. They grow around me, draining my magic in a few hours. I have no control over it.”

Her eyes brightened with interest. “Damn, that’s lucky. My magic is uncontrollable too, but it’s fire magic. You can feel the heat in the air around me constantly, and if I feel anything too strongly, I burn.”

“Really? Have you ever burned yourself?”

She grinned. “I’ve tried, but the fire dodges me. I’ll show you if you’re ever around when I light up.”

I suddenly found myself hoping she would lose her temper.

The pain in my wrist suddenly flared, and I swore, clutching the pastry so tightly that it balled in my fist. “Veil.”

“Do you have a handprint too? These things are miserable.” She tugged the top of her sleeve down, showing a silver handprint on her bicep and then quickly covering it again. “I told Ravv that if he keeps walking away from me, I’m going to melt his ice castle. He’s stayed close enough not to ignite the pain since then. He’s a grumpy asshole, but he doesn’t seem to want to start another war.”

“Is walking away what triggers it?” I asked, taking a bite of the crumpled pastry and then setting it on the plate so I could massage the aching handprint.

“Mmhm. Physical distance seems to do it.”

I nodded, considering what she’d said. It had started after Kierden left me, so I supposed that made sense.

“Does it cause the men pain too?”

“Yep. They like to pretend they don’t feel it, though. Makes them feel better about themselves and those tiny fae cocks.”

I snorted, and she flashed me a grin.

I’d never seen a man’s cock before, but considering the size of the fae men, it seemed safe to assume theirs wouldn’t be small.

“Alright, here you go.” Eisley stepped back up to me with a full plate in her hands that matched one of Laeli’s. I didn’t hesitate to dig into the unfamiliar food. If the plates they’d given us were any indication, the fae ate a lot more bread, pasta, and other grains than they did fruits and vegetables. I’d never complain if there was pasta and bread on the table.

Eisley dropped into the chair next to me. “How’s the wrist?”

I didn’t want to complain about it, so I took a massive bite of a strange-looking bread instead of answering.

“Bad,” Laeli said for me, popping another bite of something in her mouth. “Someone needs to find her king.”

“He’s helping judge the wrestling tournament, and maybe participating in it,” Eisley explained. “We’ll have to go to him.”

Laeli shrugged. “Ravv must’ve skipped it.”

“She said the men wrestling are all naked,” I told her.

Her eyes took on a wicked gleam, and she stood suddenly. “Let’s get you out of pain, then.”

I laughed.

Eisley rolled her eyes. “Sit down.”

“Why? We haven’t established whether fae men are as possessive as their bonded animals are with their mates,” Laeli pointed out. “This seems like the perfect opportunity to test the theory on someone who can’t burn the jungle down.” She pointed to me.

“I’m sure they’re not possessive of females they’re temporarily bonded to,” Eisley countered.

“Kierden is disgusted by my ears, let alone the rest of me. Pretty sure possessiveness is off the table,” I said.

Even as I said it, I remembered the feel of his hardness against my lower belly as I draped myself over his body.
