Page 5 of Dark & Beastly Fae

My lips parted in shock as I watched a silver handprint appear where he’d touched me… and the shock became horror when it started toglow.

When I looked at the man, I found his entire palm glowing the way my wrist was.

Without further ado, he threw me over his shoulder and ran down the stairs, moving faster than I ever had in my life. He was out of the castle and weaving through the town a heartbeat later, dodging the streets with guards on them easily.

There would be a few guards at the gate, but I assumed the fae was going to avoid them somehow.

“Double moon nights are the best to be on duty,” one of them remarked, as we neared.

My rescuer didn’t slow down even a little.

“Best visibility,” another man agreed. He took a bite of something that made a crisp crunching sound, and my stomach rumbled against the fae’s shoulder just as he ran past a group of six guards.

They barely had time to gape at us before my rescuer disappeared around the edge of the gate, and ran right into the Broken Woods.

As their name suggested, the Broken Woods were dark and looked dead, despite the life and magic teeming within. The trees and bushes grew without leaves or color, the dirt beneath them was an eerie reddish-brown, and the bugs and animals that called the place home hunted without cover or fear.

My world was spinning madly, and plants sprouted miraculously in our wake. Tree branches grew thicker, and leaves swelled larger.

“Stop using your magic,” the fae barked at me.

I had no control over my magic, but I couldn’t say that aloud. What if the fae ditched me because of it? I had to wait until we were somewhere I could stay alive—like a city or town.

Not that a fae city would be much safer than the woods. I’d never seen one, but I assumed they were dangerous.

The sounds of my town rallying help and getting ready to pursue us faded rapidly. They had no chance of catching the fae man. There was a reason we humans stayed away from the many magical beings in Evare, and it wasn’t because we had superior strength, speed, or senses.

My abductor slowed.

Fear made me nauseous.

Was he going to drop me because of my magic?

My world tilted, and then my ass landed on something warm and hard.

My entire body shuddered.

I looked down and realized what I was sitting on—then I shuddered again, harder.

It was one of the jungle cats. They were bigger than I’d realized, with sleek black fur that had just a hint of a pattern to it.

A massive, warm chest pinned me against the back of the jungle cat’s neck as arms wrapped around me and hands gripped the creature’s fur lightly.

The cat took off into the trees, hauling me further from my tower-shaped prison and the town that was the only place I’d ever known. Despite the shock and terror of the situation, only one thought rang through my mind:

I was finally free.

Chapter3

Nissa

As the jungle cat carried us deeper into the forest, flowers bloomed in the dead-looking trees and bushes we passed.

And my energy?

What little I had left drained away steadily.

“By the veil, what is wrong with her?”a masculine voice growled, as my body grew too weak for me to keep holding my head up. It didn’t sound like it was in my ear, but where else could it have been?
