"Hey," I said, walking up andleaning against the bar next to her.

She turned to me with a big smile. "Hey yourself.”

“Waiting for Todd?” I asked, knowing well that she was.

She sighed. “He should be here soon. I came a little early so it’s really my fault for waiting.”

I nodded knowingly.

"What about you?" she asked.

I grimaced. "On a blind date."

Lana laughed softly. "And?"

I rubbed the back of my neck, debating how honest to be. "And... she’s nice."

Lana raised a perfect eyebrow. “Just nice?”

“Well, if you really want to know, she’s beautiful and smart,” I replied honestly.

Lana glanced down and smiled softly. It might have been my wishful thinking, but I thought she looked disappointed.

“That’s great. Sounds like you’re a lucky guy.”

We looked at each other for a moment. Something in her expression made my chest tighten. She looked so sad, sitting there alone.

She finally dropped her eyes and cleared her throat. "Well, I should let you get back to your date. Todd will probably be here soon."

"Right, yeah.” I tapped the bar counter. “It was great seeing you, Lana."

I walked slowly back to my table, wishing it was me that she was waiting for. Not that I would have ever kept her waiting.

I sat back down across from Kristen, trying to focus on the rest of our date. But it was no use. My mind kept drifting back to the bar where Lana sat alone.

"Dylan?” Kristen asked, noticing I'd trailed off mid-sentence.

"I’m so sorry,” I said, lightly shaking my head. “I just have a lot on my mind today.”

Kristen nodded, her expression neutral. I felt a twinge of guilt for not giving her my full attention, but my mind was on Lana.

She sat alone, nursing a drink, waiting for my brother who was running late. I knew in my gut that he was out partying again, and that he probably wouldn’t show.

The night would end with Lana in tears.

I'd been keeping my distance, trying to respect their relationship, but the sight of her all alone gnawed at me.

As if reading my mind, Kristen gave a small sigh and said, "Well Dylan, this has been...nice, but I should probably get going."

I tried to look disappointed. "Oh really? So soon?"

She gave me a wry look. "Yes, clearly you're not feeling this date."

I winced, knowing I deserved that. "You’re right. I’m sorry for being a lousy date.”

Kristen softened, seeming to sense my sincerity. "No worries. I get it. We can call it a night."

After seeing Kristen safely into anUber, I lingered on the curb. Lana was still sitting alone when I had glanced at the bar on our way out.
