My face heated. I laughed and wiped my lips with my napkin. “Sorry, got a little carried away there.”

He smiled back at me, “Don’t mind me. Should I leave you two alone?”

We talked and laughed and soon, I forgot that I was feeling so awful just an hour ago. Dylan had managed to come to save the day again.

Dylan must’ve noticed how much I was enjoying the dessert because he let me dig into the rest after he took a few bites.

“Oh god, take this thing away from me,” I said laughing as I eyed the last bite left on the plate. “You were right. This thing is dangerous.”

“Told you,” he said, grinning.

Then he scooped the last bite onto his fork and held it in front of me.

“Please! Spare a girl the embarrassment,” I said as I covered my face, unable to stop smiling. “I ate pretty much the whole thing by myself.”

“Knock it off. You did not.” He chuckled, gently prying my hand away from my face. “Stop being polite.”

His smile was sweet and genuine, his eyes twinkling. He leaned in and brought the fork closer to my mouth, not letting go of my hand. “Here.”

How could I say no to a gorgeous man feeding me chocolate? I rolled my eyes and leaned forward. His gaze dropped to my mouth as I parted my lips, taking the last morsel off his fork.

He rolled his lip and then smiled softly as he looked down at the table. I thought he looked a little sad, and it suddenly made my chest ache.

"So, what's next for you?" I asked, breaking the awkward moment.

Dylan shrugged. "Still trying to figure out some things. It's been kind of a rough year.”

I nodded. His divorce had taken a toll, even if he downplayed it. I wanted nothing more than to comfort him, but I didn't know how he'd receive that.

“But the brewery is looking promising. We found a really cool spot for it. It’s a huge warehouse with space for outdoor seating. Brent and I are going to look at it next week.”

“How exciting! How far out is the opening?”

Dylan inhaled deeply, looking up as he thought. “Probably not for a while. It’ll take close to a year to get everything up and running. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

“Well, I’ll be your best customer,” I said. “Or if you need help, I can be a barmaid too.”

I wasn’t sure if Todd and I would still be together by then, but I’d still go and show my support.

“I’d love that,” Dylan replied, laughing. “I’m going to hold you to it.”

Before I could respond, Dylan asked, “So, how’s school? You said it was you were almost done with the last semester.”

“Yeah, I just finished this week actually. I got my degree.” I smiled widely.

Dylan raised his eyebrows in surprise.

“Lana, that’s amazing! Congratulations.” He reached out and squeezed my hand on the table. “I’m so happy for you. What are you doing to celebrate the big milestone?”

“This is my celebration,” I replied. “Tonight.”

Dylan’s smile faded as he understood why I was dressed up and waiting for Todd. He sat back in his chair and sighed, releasing my hand.

“I’m so sorry,” he said, gazing at me with apologetic eyes. “I can’t believe Todd would do that.”

“Dylan, please don’t apologize for Todd. I already feel so lucky to be here with you. Always coming to my rescue out of nowhere, like some sort of superhero.” I laughed, trying to lighten the mood.

He didn’t laugh with me. He just kept looking at me with the same sad eyes.
