“Don’t worry, baby, I will go get you a pickle and mustard. It’s okay.”

“These damn hormones are going to be the death of me,” she cries even harder, and this time I pull her into my arms.

“It’s okay, sis, Matt will go get you the pickle and mustard, and this nice lady will get you your ice cream, and I will try not to watch you eat any of it,” I say.

“Okay,” she says, wiping her eyes.

Matt places his ice cream order and runs out of the shop in search of a dill pickle and mustard.

The poor girl behind the counter makes all our scoops, but cringes when she puts Alisa’s together. I cringe with her.God, I hope if I ever get pregnant, I never have cravings like that,I think to myself.

Then I pause in my thoughts, do I want to get pregnant? I never thought about having kids before, since my job is dangerous. Does Conner even want kids? I mull over the thoughts, as I help Conner take our ice cream to the table.

We sit down, as Matt comes back in with the pickle and mustard. l watch Alisa’s eyes light up in excitement. I can’t watch her, but everyone else seems to be staring at her as she takes a bite of her concoction, moaning like it’s the best thing she has ever eaten.

I look at the faces of everyone else in the room, and they all seem to be in agreement with the yuk factor, but Alisa is happy and not crying, so I let it go and don’t watch her eat.

I look down at my rocky road ice cream, enjoying the normal flavors of the chocolate, marshmallows, and nuts. Connor got the peanut butter cup, and Matt had settled on the cotton candy, though it seems Alisa is eating that as well.

Once everyone is done, we walk back to Matt and Alisa’s place, with Connor and I calling it a night in the driveway. We drive back to my place when I ask, “Carly?”

He takes a deep breath, sighing softly, “Carly was a brief fling three years ago. It was never anything serious.”

“Maybe not for you, but I’d say she feels differently,” I tell him.

“I can’t help how she feels, but I’ve done nothing to indicate to her I wanted anything more.”

“She said two days in a row, did you run into her while getting the pizza?”

“Yes, she was coming out of Pizza Ria, and I was walking in to pick up our order.”

I nod. “Do I need to be concerned about anything?”

“Hell no, baby girl. I made it clear you are mine, and she is not.”

I smile because he did do that. When we get home, I plan to show him how appreciative I am.

Monday morning,my nerves are in full swing as I walk up to the firehouse. I shouldn’t be nervous, but I can’t help it. My stomach is in knots, but I take a deep breath in and release it slowly. I walk in and see Connor talking with a Lieutenant.

He looks at me, giving me a quick wink, then says, “Lieutenant Clark, this is Firefighter Sam Holland. Sam, this is Lieutenant Colin Clark, and he will be your supervisor on Engine.”

“Lieutenant Clark, very nice to meet you,” I say, holding out my hand.

“Nice to meet you too, Sam. Welcome to the firehouse. Let’s get you set up, and then you can meet the rest of the team.”

I nod just as I hear my name called, “Sam?”

I turn and see Tyson walking in with Sharon beside him.

“Hey, Ty.”

“What are you doing here? Wait, are you our new transfer?”

“I am. Hi Sharon, nice to see you again.”

“You too, Samantha. I didn’t realize you were a firefighter as well.”
