“Yes. I’m transferring up here from South Carolina. I need to go, but I hope we can get together soon.”

“Me too,” she replies with a shy smile that doesn’t reach all the way to her eyes.

I nod and follow Lieutenant Clark through the firehouse, then meet the rest of the crew.

True to his word, Connor stayed out of the way, only showing up when we were at a fire, or to grab some food when we were eating.

We pull into the bay from being called to a kitchen fire, and I can feel fatigue catching up to me. I go to the bathroom, where our lockers are also located at. I see a piece of paper attached to mine, so I grab it off my locker and open it up.

YOU DON’T BELONG

What the hell? Why would someone put this in my locker?

“Hey Sam, how’s your first day going?” Tyson asks, walking into the area.

I crumble the note in my hand, turning to smile at Tyson, who does seem genuinely happy to have me here. I thought everyone was, but maybe that was wishful thinking.

“Hey. Is it always this busy?”

“Not most days, but occasionally we do have these days. It does make the hours go by fast, though.”

I laugh. “You are right. It’s also exhausting,” I add.

“Weren’t you busy in South Carolina?”

“Always, but it was a big city, this is a small town even though we consider it a city. I’m just surprised how busy it is here.”

“I like when we are busy, though the downtime is nice too,” he says with a chuckle.

“Yes, it is. So how long do you have on your probie status?”

“I have another six months to go.”

“Have they treated you well, aside from the pranks that all probie’s go through?”

“Yeah, these guys may give me hell, but they still make me feel like a part of the team.”

“That’s great news, I had that as well,” I tell him with a smile.

“So are you happy to be back in Largo?” Tyson asks.

“I am. Did you know Alisa is pregnant?”

“I did. I ran into her at Cafe Brew. Congrats on becoming an Aunt, well almost, anyways,” he says with a chuckle.

“Thank you. I am excited for her and Matt. What about you and Sharon? How long have you two been together?”

“We’ve been together for two years.”

“Any plans to pop the question?”

“I picked out a ring last week. I just haven’t decided how to propose yet. I want it to be special, you know?”

I nod. “Yeah, I do. I’m so happy for you, and I know she will say yes.”

“Do you want to see it?”

“You have it here?”
