“Would you come if I said it’s a surprise?”

“Definitely not.”

“It’s a twenty-minute drive away.”

“Still no.”

“You’ll like it. I promise.”

“Still—” I start to say, but there’s a shout from deeper in the apartment.

“Oh, just go already!” Jamila’s voice, sounding annoyed.

I stifle a laugh. Nolan grins at me. Neither of us speak until I step forward. “Well, I guess that decides it. I think she’s sick of me.”

“Thanks, Jamila,” he calls out.

“You’re welcome, asshole.”

“Come on before she changes her mind.” I take Nolan’s arm and tug him away. I glance back into the apartment and catch Jamila watching me, a little smile on her lips.

I expectedthe drive to be painful. The last few days have been tough, physically and emotionally. My back’s killing me from sleeping on that stupid couch. But instead, it’s surprisingly normal.

“Why don’t you seem angry?” I ask him as we wind our way out of the city and into a familiar suburb.

“Because I’m not.”

“You should be. I mean, I lied to you about the baby.”

“You kept the baby from me. You never said you weren’t pregnant.”

“We both know it’s the same thing.”

He glances over. “Do you want me to be angry? I can punish you, if that’s what you’d like.”

“Are you flirting?”

“Yes, darling. I am most definitely flirting. And threatening to spank your cute little ass until you beg for more.”

My cheeks turn red. “Okay, a little too much, too fast. Let’s slow down.”

He’s smiling as he makes a turn. “I’m not mad because I understand why you were afraid to tell me. You had your reasons, and it doesn’t matter anymore. All that matters to me is you and that baby now.”

“That’s a really good answer.”

“I know. I’ve been rehearsing it.”

I laugh, feeling good and comfortable, as he turns into a neighborhood. “We’re heading to that house again, aren’t we?”

“Maybe.” His smile is sly.

“Why are we headed to that house? I thought it was for sale.”

“It’s not, at least not anymore.” He pulls down the street and coasts into the driveway. TheFor Salesign out front has a big redSOLDplastered across the front.

“What are we doing here then?” I frown at the walkway, at the silent home.
