I wanted to stay.

I’m on the verge of stomping my feet when I say, “I don’t want to wear a dress.”

Leaning over me, he scrubs his palms over my face to dry my cheeks.

“Go naked. That’ll raise money.”

“Go away, Jake.”

Laughing under his breath, he scratches the back of his neck before pulling me up from the bed.

I feel like bursting into tears again.

I knot my fingers in my hair, but there’s no hair.

I never thought cutting it would put me through such emotional turmoil.

Arm around my waist, he backs me into the wall—the air whooshing from my lungs is hot.

“I need to leave for a while.”

Shocked, my mouth parts. “You mean you’re leaving me alone? You won’t be watching my every move?”

“There’s security on the gate.”

I groan under my breath. “There always is.”

He ignores my frustration.

“I won’t be long. Make sure you’re smiling when I get back.”

I force my lips upwards.

“A real smile.”

I roll my eyes.

He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear. It’s still weird when I don’t feel it around my waist. Instead, it falls in waves to just below my shoulders.

My shoulders!

I’m bald.

He winks at me, and my cheeks twitch. “At least I can still do this.” His fingers sprawl over the back of my neck, sliding into my hair. He tugs and presses hot lips to the base of my exposed throat.

Panting, I whisper, “We need to stop this, Jake.”

“I know.”

“It was a terrible idea.”

“The worst.” But he doesn’t stop the tour of my neck with his mouth, and I crumble.

My heart wins again.

My brain needs to up its game. It hasn’t won yet.

Relishing in the feel of him, I close my eyes.
