To my disappointment, we arrive early.

He cursed profanities I didn’t even know were words before we left, threatened me in the most enticing way I’ve ever been threatened, and almost broke the steering wheel when I crossed my legs, and the slit in my dress slipped, shouting, “Stay fucking still.”

He’s very over the top and grumpy when he’s turned on.

The auction is taking place on the rooftop of JW Media.

As we enter the lobby, I take a step away from him. We might not be able to hide that we arrived together, but I don’t want people to know I constantly have a heaviness in my pelvis because of him.

People are streaming in, heading toward the elevators and onto the rooftop.

Tonight is a big deal, and it’s unusual to see him so nervous.

“You good?” I whisper as we wait for the elevator.

He dips his chin, not looking at me. “I’m fine.”

Grumpy Jake is back.

When the doors open, he guides me inside with a hand on my elbow. There are other people in here, but I’m only aware of him as he greets familiar faces.

Every set of eyes is on us.

On him.

He doesn’t say a word, doesn’t move, yet draws all the attention in this metal box.

My heart is going to combust in my chest. He doesn’t look at me, but the tension rolls off him. All I can do is fidget with my purse and wipe imaginary wrinkles from my dress.

Halfway, he leans over me and presses the button for the thirty-third floor.

“I need to get something from my office,” he explains.

“I can meet you up there.”

“You’re coming with me.”

I don’t argue. I’m afraid if I do, the elevator will collapse from the pressure.

The doors open, and again, he guides me out, like I’ll fall through an imaginary hole in the ground.

The floor is dark with only dull desk lights guiding the way.

“Jake?” I whisper. I don’t know why. There’s nobody here.

He glances at me from the corner of his eye as we walk.

Trying to fill the silence, I ask, “When did you rebrand from the Lynwood Agency to JW Media?”

“Six years ago.”

I wait for him to continue, but he doesn’t.

Impenetrable.

“Why?”

He blows out a breath, frustrated with my questions as he opens his office door.
