Rose pats the side of his face. “I’ll leave you to it for a while. You’re in good hands, Jake.”

His brows draw tight as his eyes zoom between me and Rose.

His shoulders fall with a deep sigh.

He knows.

“It wasn’t a dolphin, was it?”

“No,” I choke, laughing at myself.

Sitting on my other side, he takes my hand in his and rests it on his thigh. Jay-Jay’s breathing evens on my shoulder, and I wrap an arm around him and lie his head on my lap to keep him from falling.

I wish someone would do the same for me.

I catch Jake watching when I look back at him.

He presses a lingering kiss to my forehead. It feels more intimate than all the touches before.

“Smile,” he whispers.

When he pulls back, he winks.

He kisses the back of my hand while I run my other hand through Jay-Jay’s hair.

The world keeps spinning.

We watch it go by together.

Chapter Thirty-Two

“Where are we going?” I ask for what feels like the tenth time.

He rolls his eyes. “So impatient.”

“That’s been your answer for the last hour and a half. I’m not good with surprises.”

He rests his hands on my thigh under my sundress and squeezes, slowing my nervous bouncing.

After leaving the beach house, he told me he wanted to show me something on our way home.

We still haven’t arrived, and I’m running out of patience.

And I’m on edge because I haven’t felt his lips on me for over twenty-four hours.

This is a dangerous addiction.

I blow out a breath and keep my eyes focused on the road. “Sometimes I want to punch you, Williams.”

He barks a laugh. “Sometimes I want to gag you, Russell.”

I pinch him. “You’d enjoy it.”

“Immensely.”

I switch up the air conditioning.

He glances at me from the corner of his eye.
