What is he talking about?

“Who?”

He rears back, searching my face as his eyes narrow. “The captain,” he drawls.

“I get it, Sam. But is he also going to be responsible for a murder because someday, Beth will have to leave this shelter? Why does she have to be the one living her life in fear? This is about control. Just like the bunny on my doorstep. He doesn’t want me or those children. He wants control of his wife and family.”

He blinks twice.

Silence ensues.

“Fuck,” he curses, pinching the bridge of his nose again. No doubt kneading the headache I’m creating. “Did you speak to Jake?”

“A little.”

He shakes his head. “He didn’t tell you,” he mutters under his breath. I’m unsure if he means for me to hear.

“Sam?”

“Talk to Jake.”

“Why?”

“Please, Claire. This will make more sense if you speak to him.”

Nothing makes sense.

“I will,” I promise, backing away. “After I speak to someone with proper answers.”

What other choice do I have?

He calls after me, but I ignore him as I storm out of the parking lot and into my car. My mind is in overdrive.

There are plenty of women that press charges. Some don’t succeed, but some do. Most can at least get a restraining order.

But him…I fear he’s proving to be as invincible as he believes.

His father is a judge. I get it. But there are people lower on the chain not even trying. As far as I can see, it doesn’t pass Sam. Even with the endless evidence, and hours of work, they ignore everything.

Like Beth.

Like Jess.

Like my mother.

The men are invincible while the women they harm are invisible.

And I’m sick of people looking past them.

With a calming breath, I exit my car into the sticky city heat, smoothing the imaginary wrinkles from my blue sundress.

Is it always this stuffy in the city?

I’ve become accustomed to houses surrounded by forests.

I’m a woman on a mission when I step out in front of the city police station.

This mouth might get me in trouble, but today it’s going to open, and it won’t shut until I’m heard.
