I’m sick of living in the silence.

It’s too loud.

But I don’t expect to see Jake rushing down the steps toward me.

Just the sight of him tosses me off-kilter.

Maybe he has the same idea I do.

I want to speak to this so-called captain. The one who believes it’s okay to leave monsters on the street.

“What are you doing here?”

Hands on my shoulders, he pushes me back onto the car. “Baby, get back in your car.”

He’s almost shaking.

“No. I want to speak to someone,” I demand. “This is bullshit, Jake.”

“Claire, please. Just get back in your car. Go home. I’ll meet you there. We’ll talk.”

He’s making me uneasy.

“What’s going on? What happened?”

But something in my fight-or-flight kicks in and my eyes zone past his shoulder to a man coming down the steps.

I’m glad Jake is holding me because my knees give up.

No.

Our eyes connect.

He freezes.

I think I’m dying.

I can’t breathe.

Those eyes.

They’re mine.

“Please, get back in your car.”

I hardly hear Jake’s desperate pleas.

His head falls against mine, defeated. “Claire.”

My eyes dart around the station, looking for anything to tell me this is a horrible nightmare, but everything looks real.

Those people walking on the street are real.

The cars passing are real.

The clouds in the sky are real.

I pinch my skin.
