I allow them a moment to say goodbye before Hannah takes my hand.

“See you tomorrow, Mom,” she shouts when we’re already halfway down the corridor.

I hear Beth’s laugh as we leave.

“Do babies always cry so much?” Hannah asks as we exit the hospital. She wasn’t overly impressed with how loud her new baby sister was.

“Sometimes, but it’s not forever.”

We swing our arms as we hold hands on the way to my car.

Instinctively, my eyes scan the parking lot.

I’m being paranoid.

She grimaces and nervously knots her fingers in her hair.

“I bet you’re going to be the best big sister.”

She shrugs. “I thought Mom was coming home today?”

“The doctors said she should be okay to leave tomorrow. But that means we have to be extra careful around Mommy. She’s going to be tired.”

Hannah rolls her eyes. “I would be too if I had to listen tothatcry all day.”

I bite my lip to hide the laugh as she climbs into the back seat. “Buckle up.”

Another roll of her eyes.

Seriously, what’s with the attitude?

“I’m thirsty,” she moans.

“You’ve got juice in your backpack.”

She stretches toward the floor. “I can’t reach.”

She can definitely reach.

Plucking her bag from the floor, I unzip it and hand her the juice.

A white, fluffy head pokes out through the top with the name Hannah stitched to the ear.

Did she not just give this to the baby?

Confused, I look back at her as she swings her legs.

“Hannah, did Sam give you this bunny?”

He would have told me if he gave back the original. I mean, I almost fought him for it.

“The policeman?”

I nod, hating the chill that makes me shiver.

“No. It’s my bunny.”

“But you gave it to your sister.”
