His brows furrow, causing a deep line of what I think is frustration between his eyes, and he frowns.

“What?”

“You’re making excuses for him.”

“Am not,” I fight back, horrified.

“Yes, you are.”

“Am not.”

“Why are you so defensive?” He smirks, and it annoys the hell out of me because it’s a sexy smile. Smug. One side of his mouth lifts higher than the other, but it only enhances the fiery glint in his dark amber eyes.

It’s infuriating.

“I didn’t ask you to sit with me, you know.”

“Now you’re deflecting.”

“Are you a shrink?” I bite back, his honesty scratching too close to a raw nerve.

He shrugs.

Fucking infuriating.

I swing back around and run my fingers through my long hair.

He’s right.

Of course he is.

But I hate telling people they’re right.

I blow out a long breath and cross my arms over my chest. “Old habits,” I breathe, unsure if he even hears me. “Want to know something even crazier?” I don’t give him a chance to answer before I continue. “I turned down my dream job in the city for him.”

It’s the first time I’ve said it out loud. I never even told Mandy or Garry, and they’ve been my best friends since we were four.

“I’ve never allowed a man to come between me and what I wanted to do, but somehow, I allowed him to change that. I said no to my future for the chance of a future with him. Truth is, looking back, I’m not sure if I even wanted a future with him. And now I’m angry at myself.”

Have I learned anything from my mother?

“I’m also thinking there’s truth serum in the donut glaze.” Gulping, I fight the lump in my throat and close my eyes to ease the sting. I build the courage to look back at him, and he’s staring straight at me.

“You want my opinion?” he asks.

No.

“Sure.”

“He’s an idiot. Want some advice from an old man?”

I scoff a laugh.

He can’t be over thirty-five.

Although, his eyes say he has lived through another lifetime. Maybe that’s what I recognize—the undeniable glint of a past, but I nod anyway.

“Don’t waste any more sunsets on him. Don’t sit here and look at something beautiful and make it ugly. When you look hard enough, you’ll always find the good.”
