Isabel has her turn, and by the time we’re finished, everyone is ready to jump in the water.

Sitting on the edge of the shallow end with Isabel on my lap, I cup water in my hand to splash her legs.

“You go, Hannah.”

Isabel claps and screams something incoherent.

Hannah takes Logan’s hand and stares up at him with so much adoration, it makes my heart swell in my chest.

He dips his chin. “Ready?”

She rolls her shoulders back. “Ready.”

Hand in hand, they take a short run-up. They jump, soaring through the air without a care.

A lump forms in my throat.

My baby did it.

They swim to the surface.

“Well done, kid. I’m so proud of you.” I notice when the pride gleams in his eyes because I’ve seen it in mine so many times.

I grab Isabel around the waist. “Our turn, my little daredevil.”

We’re in the shallow end, but I’ve no doubt she would jump on the other side just as quickly.

“Move your butts, ladies. What are you waiting for?” Logan laughs, lifting Hannah onto his shoulders.

As Logan and Hannah reach us, I kiss the top of Isabel’s head, and we kick off the edge, right into his waiting arms.

Twenty-Seven

Logan

Hannah comes tiptoeing into the kitchen with a lazy smile and red faced from the sun.

“What’s up, kiddo?”

She shrugs, pulling herself onto the high stool at the breakfast counter. “Mom fell asleep with Isabel.” She rests her head on her hands, exhausted from a day of play in the heat.

I open the refrigerator and grab two bottles of water, opening one and sliding it across the counter to Hannah. She rolls her eyes so hard I’m surprised they don’t get stuck in the back of her head.

“I hate water.”

“Stay hydrated, kid. It’s hotter than ball—” I stop myself just in time. “Balloons out there,” I quickly say.

Balloons?

Jesus, Logan.

I really need to get a grip on my language around these kids, and by the way Hannah pulls her brows together I know she’s onto me.

She’s too smart.

I tap my knuckles against the counter and stand straight. “I don’t know about you, but I could eat. Want some lunch?”

She perks up. “Sure. What are you thinking?”
