His brows furrow, his shoulders still vibrating with rage as he takes the photo from his pocket and examines it. I watch as it slowly sinks in. “This is you?”

Of course it’s me.

I’d know those bruises anywhere.

“There’s more.” He freezes in his anger, so I continue. “Nobody was willing to prosecute Rob for what he did, and I knew the only way to stop him was with proof. I started documenting every injury with pictures, writing in a journal. I hid it away with Hannah’s scrapbooks so he wouldn’t notice. That journal was in the garage when the house burned down. I have no idea how anybody got them. I was told nothing was salvageable from the fire.”

“And the reporter?”

“Is investigating how Rob got away with it for so long. How his father pulled strings for his son to walk free.” I swallow the fear in my throat. “His father is Judge Ellison, but I’m sure you know that.”

He backs away, his decision already made.

Archer is at his side. “What’s going on?”

He’s looking at me but is speaking to his brother. “I need you. Call Jaxson and get Ace on the phone.”

Archer already has his phone in his hand as he walks away at Logan’s side.

“Logan,” I plead.

“Go home to the girls, Beth. This isn’t fucking happening. Not to you. Go home.”

“Wait.” It’s my last attempt before he gives me one final pained look over his shoulder.

Molly takes my hand. “Leave them to it, sweetie. They’ll get it sorted.”

I don’t have a choice.

They’re driving away before I can say another word.

Logan

“What do you need?” Ace asks, his voice sounding over the car speaker.

“Find something on Judge Ellison. Something he doesn’t want to get out to the public.”

“Any chance you’ll tell me why?”

Usually, I wouldn’t, but this man asked her on a date which means there’s some feelings there. I need to put aside my own want to strangle him.

“It’s for Beth. She was married to his son. Some reporter is trying to create a story about their marriage. Let’s just say, he should’ve had a bullet in his head long before he put one in himself.”

“Consider it done. Give me an hour. I’ll find something. Is Beth okay?”

I grit my teeth. “I’ve got her.”

“Of course. I’ll call you.”

When he ends the call, Archer looks to me. “Jaxson has a journalist friend at The Times. He’s on it. Fuck. Ellison was her father-in-law? Does Beth know we have history with him?”

“She doesn’t need to.”

“Have you got a plan?”

“No. But I promise you, I’m not going back to her without this story being killed. Those photos came from someone. If the judge doesn’t have them, he’s about to realize real fast he needs to find out who does. And if he threatens my girls one more time, I’ll fucking do time for his murder myself.”
