Chapter 22.

Kenzie

Once they were at their cars, they stopped for a minute to talk. Marshall turned to his dad, “Are you heading straight home?”

Chris nodded, “Yea I don’t need anything. Kenzie, do you need to stop anywhere?”

She couldn’t think of anything, “Nope, I think I’m good.”

“Okay great, then I’ll follow you back. I don’t know why but I got a weird feeling when we stepped outside. So, just to be safe, I’ll watch your back.” Marshall glanced around like he was looking for anything out of place.

She trusted his instincts, so she looked too, but everything seemed normal. There were quite a few people around, but they were all going into shops, looking through windows, or chatting with friends. There were a few kids skateboarding toward the square and an elderly woman arranging flowers outside of the floral shop. It all looked perfectly ordinary.

She started to relax a bit as they pulled out of the parking lot but turned to make sure Marshall was behind them.

Chris patted her knee, “Don’t worry, he’s just being cautious.”

“Okay.” She knew they both had better instincts than her, so she sat back and relaxed in her seat.

They were about halfway back to the pack when the hair on the back of her neck stood up. She jerked around, making sure Marshall was still there.

Once she saw he was okay, she started looking around, trying to find the source of her nerves.

Chris picked up on her unease, “What is it?”

“Something is wrong, I feel it.” She couldn’t pinpoint the source though.

He gripped the steering wheel a little tighter, “Tell Marshall what you feel.”

She glanced at him. He was fully alert now, watching the road carefully. He trusted her, without question, he believed her. She reached out to Marshall,“Hey, something is wrong. I can feel it, but I don’t know what or where it’s coming from. It’s like a buzzing in my head.”

“I feel it too. I don’t want to distract myself by dropping my shields. Could you look and see if anything pops out at you?”

“Just a sec.”She closed her eyes to calm herself, then dropped her walls and opened her eyes. She looked around and still didn’t see anything. She squinted, trying to look closer. She knew something was out there.

Suddenly her vision sharpened.

There, coming right for them, was a huge SUV. It was cloaked somehow, the image wavering. She didn’t have time to do anything but yell to both of the men she had come to care about so much.

“Dad!”“Marshall!”

That’s all she got out before the truck rammed into Chris’ side of the car. The car flew into a spin, running off the road and into the ditch on the shoulder. Her head slammed into the side window as the air bag deployed, hitting her in the face.

Chris controlled the spin and kept the car from flipping, then suddenly they lurched to a stop, hitting a guard rail.

She was a little disoriented but tried to shake it off as she unbuckled her seat belt. She ignored the pain in her head and her nose and looked at Chris, trying to assess his injuries.

His arm looked broken. The air bag must have thrown it into the window. He had some cuts and scrapes and was probably going to be bruised, but he seemed mostly okay.

She looked back toward the road to try and see Marshall and the SUV that had rammed into them.

What she didn’t expect was to see Marshall’s truck flipped over in the middle of the road, a second SUV beside it.

Two men piled out of each SUV; they were wearing all black and carrying large guns. They started approaching each of the vehicles, guns at the ready. She couldn’t see Marshall,“Marshall?”

She called his name over and over, but he didn’t reply, “Oh no. Chris I think Marshall got knocked out. Those guys are coming.”

Chris whipped around to see what was going on, “Shit.” He tried to get his door open, but it wouldn’t budge so he smashed the rest of the window out and started to climb through it, “Get out Kenzie. I’ll hold these guys off. You try to get to Marshall.”
